A number of local community activists and elected officials spoke at the press conference on Thursday. 
“The first step is getting to know your neighbors. When you know your neighbors you understand there’s no reason for them to be abducted,” said Lourdes Medina, from SIREN, urging everyone to get involved.
“Call Valley Watch if you see [abductions]. Sign up for [legal] observation training on taking notes, understanding your first amendment rights and understanding your privacy rights.”

Cristina Gutierrez, an organizer with the May 1 Coalition said “we have reports of at least fifty [ICE] arrests on Tuesday in Fresno and the surrounding communities. The message we are sending [to the community] is that if you don’t have to go out on the street, stay at home.” She said her organization, churches and other advocacy groups will support families with food and other resources during this time.

A grassroots group of community volunteers meet people on L Street where they have been displaced and released into a city they’ve never been. A Central Valley congressional incumbent voted to strip $880 billion from Medicaid. McClatchy cut the reporters who would have told you: this is an attack on our rights. Not one blow but a steady narrowing of what we can read, where we can walk, who gets care and what we are allowed to know.

Casi todos los días, cuatro o cinco voluntarios llegan a la oficina del Servicio de Control de Inmigración y Aduanas (ICE, por sus siglas en inglés) en Fresno para dar apoyo y asistencia a los inmigrantes que salen de la detención y quedan en la calle L. Rapid Response Squad Helps Immigrants

Nearly every day, four or five volunteers show up at the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in Fresno to give aid and assistance to immigrants who are released from detention onto L Street. For some, it is the only help available to people who find themselves in a strange place with little or no resources. If they are lucky, they will be greeted by a volunteer with a helping hand.
