Texas Never Leaves You
There is a specific moment that gets a former Texan every time, and it usually happens somewhere far from home.
Someone lets you merge. You lift two fingers off the wheel. They don't respond, because where you live now, nobody knows that little Texas road-wave. You sit there with your hand slightly raised, feeling like you just spoke a language nobody understood.
That’s the thing about Texas. You can leave it geographically, but the habits follow you.
You still wave at strangers. You still say “yes, sir” and “yes, ma’am.” You still hold the door for someone twenty steps behind you. You still measure distance in hours, not miles, and somehow think four hours is “not that far.”
The weather calibration never resets either. You can live somewhere with mild winters for years and still see 50 degrees and think, Better grab a jacket.
You miss the wide-open roads. The sunsets that seem too big for the sky. The smell of rain after a hot day. The small-town football lights. The barbecue. The bluebonnets. The sound of country music coming from somewhere down the road.
And then somebody in your new state casually says something dismissive about Texas.
And that’s when it hits you.
You left Texas on purpose.
But deep down, a part of Texas never left you. 🤠⭐️🇺🇸
