Thank you Green Valley Elementary Students and Teachers and the Lansdale Community.

The Green Valley Elementary School's Green Team recently added storm drain markers in the Lansdale neighborhood that read "No Dumping, Drains to Creek". Runoff from pollutants found on roads and lawns can impact the quality of our water. Litter and yard waste can clog storm drains and lead to flooding. The students are asking their neighbors to prevent this and created their own slogan: "use your brain, only rain goes down the drain."

Supplies were provided through the county's Community Storm Drain Marking program: https://www.frederickcountymd.gov/8795/Community-Storm-Drain-Marking-Program. This effort was led by Ms. Hanlon and Green Team advisors with the help of the Lansdale Community Association and supported by the Mobilize Frederick Education Group.

Frederick County has quadrupled its number of Maryland Green Schools in the last four years! The FCPS Sustainability Team, Green Centers (like Mobilize Frederick), and public and private schools are working together to improve sustainability and teach the next generation of environmental stewards.

We are Hiring: Apprenticeship Program Manager

MAEF is seeking an organized, collaborative professional to serve as Apprenticeship Program Manager for a new agricultural apprenticeship initiative.
This position will lead MAEF’s role in a statewide apprenticeship consortium, providing relationship building, grant oversight, compliance, partner coordination, and data tracking.

The Program Manager will work closely with workforce partners, employers, schools, and agricultural organizations to help apprentices successfully move from recruitment → training → employment → retention. The position will also help document and refine the apprenticeship model for expansion to additional agricultural employers and communities across Maryland.

Key responsibilities include:
• Manage grant requirements, budgets, documentation, and reporting
• Coordinate with consortium partners and monitor program progress
• Track apprentice enrollment, OJL, RTI, wages, and outcomes
• Support employer and workforce partner engagement
• Identify and address program challenges
• Develop systems and resources to support statewide apprenticeship expansion
We’re looking for someone with:
• 3–5+ years of experience in program management, workforce development, education, grants, apprenticeship, nonprofit administration, or a related field
• Strong project management, communication, organizational, and relationship-building skills
• Experience with budgets, grant reporting, and/or program data
• A passion for connecting students and job seekers with meaningful agricultural career opportunities

Experience with Maryland Department of Labor programs, registered apprenticeships, workforce development, agriculture, or agricultural education is a plus.

School gardens are vibrant spaces for learning and hands-on exploration, while also demonstrating how we can all contribute to healthy ecosystems in our community. Last year, we supported the FCPS Sustainability Team in developing a new garden planning and approval process. Our toolkit and “How-To” presentation further engage students by inviting them to take an active role in designing their school garden. These are all native plant gardens at FCPS schools.
