Krampus is back home with us πŸ™

We are still waiting on histopath results, but his necropsy did show a possible cause of death.

Our veterinarian found lots of hemorrhaged tissue in his lungs that I was told would not have occurred post-mortem. This could have been caused by bursting blood vessels or a blood clot, neither of which would have been preventable.

After seeing the effects of metabolic bone disease on reptiles over and over again, I'm inclined to believe that the condition can and does put an enormous amount of stress on organs.

Because his death was so sudden, I wanted to have tissue examined just to make sure there was nothing present that may not have been detectable through normal bloodwork. Those results will be shared as soon as they come in, and we'll have full closure on this sweet boy.

Parasite testing and PCR's should be non-negotiable! When you get a new puppy or kitten, it is common practice to test for parasites and safeguard against certain pathogens. While we don't have vaccines for reptiles (yet?), similar health and safety measures should be anticipated for them, if you plan on keeping them as pets.

Some may not agree with this petition.

But when you work in rescue and vet med, and see so so many sick reptiles who were purchased from pet stores, I strongly feel that something has to give.

Reptiles are not novelties. They are not something "cool" to buy for a child who more often than not will quickly lose interest. They should not be sent home with outdated care information, if any is given at all.

It's not "just a snake". It's not "just a lizard". I've even been told by an owner that they weren't going to bother with better care for their axolotl because "it's just a salamander".

Owners have a responsibility to do research, and pet stores should be held to higher standards to make sure animals are going to good homes.

Sorry I sound stuffy, I've been a bit sick for the last 2 weeks! 😭
Munster has a taste for blood now πŸ‘πŸ‘„πŸ‘πŸ©Έ
Even when interactions don't go how we want them to, they can still be used as learning opportunities. Why Munster bit me is a mystery, but we'll use this as a teaching moment πŸ˜…

Our first ever event at Petsense by Tractor Supply in Franklin, KY went well! We got to speak with lots of local reptile lovers, dispel some fears and stigmas, and share science-based information on herpetoculture!

We also met a new friend with Grateful Dogs Animal Rescue, who had some sweet pups who found their families and got adopted πŸ’š

Our beardie Chimichanga was an excellent little ambassador, greeting newbies and veterans of the reptile world. He even waited like a gentleman to be taken outside to drop a p**p, well done sir πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘

Great example of firm dedication to conservation efforts πŸ™

This is not a post I thought we would have to make for Krampus. Sometime yesterday while I was away at work, Krampus curled up in one of his burrows and passed away.

I had just made a post a few days ago, admiring how far he'd come. He was looking and behaving so much better than when he first arrived a year ago. He was so much more mobile, eating and drinking well, and had lost much of the weight we were concerned about.

To come home last night and find him gone was shocking and devastating. Krampus was not a young beardie by any means, but longterm complications from metabolic bone disease and obesity likely finally took their toll.

We will have a necropsy done to see what may have caused this. There were no external signs aside from obvious physical deformities, but there may have been more going on internally. His last bloodwork showed nothing concerning. Once we get that report, Krampus will be respectfully cremated and memorialized.

Krampus, I hope you know you were so very loved. I'm so sorry you had to suffer in any way. I hope your remaining time here on this earth was full and happy.
