What began as a program for at-risk youth has grown i The trainer running the barn was putting on some camps and providing riding lessons, etc.

Happiness Through Horses creates a place of healing and connection for individuals across generations—from struggling teens to families and seniors seeking purpose, belonging, and emotional well-being. When it was first discovered that we could touch the lives of kids through our passion of the equine world, we decided to raise some money to help one maybe 2 kids in the summer of 2013. The barn where we kept our horses was like a family and we all had a hand in helping out and turning ideas into a business. I wanted to incorporate a kid or two into those activities. Some one who normally wouldn't get the chance. I have seen the amazing things that can happen when you pair a kid and a horse and I wanted to even the playing field even if for just one child. So I convinced our trainer and assured him he would be paid. We ended up not helping one little dude that summer but 7. The memory that stood out the most for me was one young man, I believe he was 8 at the time. His grandma paid for a day camp and then our efforts raised the money for a week camp. His family was so touched by the difference that one day made they asked that we find a way to continue his experience. We put that young man in a week long summer camp and he blossomed like a beautiful flower. You see he is a beautiful little man but other kids didn't see that. He was bullied and called names. Needless to say it caused pain, distrust and sadness that affected his self esteem. A horse named Jewel changed all that. So we decided to take our ideas and started Happiness Through Horses. We have a ton of growing and learning to do but we WILL touch many lives as there is a lot riding on our kids.

💔 Our Sweet Pop-Pop, Tonka

Yesterday morning, I walked out to the mini's and found our beloved little miniature donkey, Tonka, peacefully lying in the middle of his pen. My heart dropped to the ground.

There were no signs of struggle. He looked so calm and peaceful, as though he had simply laid down, closed his eyes, and taken his last breath.

We knew Tonka was an older little gentleman, but his passing was completely unexpected. We just weren’t ready to say goodbye. 💔

Tonka and his son, Ghost (aka Toy) came to Happiness Through Horses last October. We were so hopeful that we would have many more years with these two special boys. We worked hard to rehabilitate their feet and had them both gelded so they could live happier, healthier, and more comfortable lives.

We had so many plans for our sweet boys, but it seems it was just Pop-Pop’s time.

Tonka was such a kind, gentle little soul. He had the softest, biggest, cutest ears you could ever imagine, and a sweetness about him that made it impossible not to fall in love.

While our hearts are broken, we find comfort in knowing that his final year was filled with love, good care, companionship, and the peace of having a place to call home.

We wish we could have given you so many more years, sweet Tonka. But we are grateful for the time we had and the opportunity to give you the life you deserved.

Your son, Ghost, is still here with us, and we will make sure he receives all the extra love and attention he needs as we all adjust to life without you.

Rest easy, sweet Pop-Pop. You may have been a little donkey, but you left some mighty big hoofprints on our hearts. 🫏❤️
