Last evening marked the final program in our Discovering Armstrong County: A Journey Through Local History series with Apollo, PA: Notable Lives & Lasting Legends at the Apollo Historical Society.

Participants explored Apolloโ€™s rich history and learned about the lives and legacies of nationally recognized figures including Nellie Bly and General Samuel McCartney Jackson, discovering how their stories connect to broader American history. The Society also shared Apolloโ€™s connection to legendary actor Jimmy Stewart, the grandson of General Jackson, who reportedly spent many summers in Apollo visiting family at the historic Jackson home.

Following the presentation, attendees enjoyed a tour of the historic Drake Cabin in Apollo.

This series was inspired in part by the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States and provided an opportunity to reflect on the local stories, people, and places that connect Armstrong County to the larger American story. Through each program, participants were encouraged to engage with local historical resources and continue exploring the rich heritage found throughout our communities โ€” supporting the Armstrong Center for Community Learningโ€™s mission of connecting people to resources that enhance lifelong learning.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Apollo Historical Society for hosting and presenting this wonderful program. We also want to thank the many individuals who attended one, two, three, or all four programs in the series!

This springโ€™s series included:
๐Ÿ“ April 29 โ€“ Kittanning: Early Settlements & Revolutionary Roots at the Armstrong County Historical Society
๐Ÿ“ May 6 โ€“ Dayton: Small Town Stories & the Underground Railroad at the Dayton Historical Society
๐Ÿ“ May 13 โ€“ Ford City: Civil War Stories Among the Stones at Appleby Manor Presbyterian Church, featuring a presentation by Katie Wolfe from the Ford City Public Library
๐Ÿ“ May 27 โ€“ Apollo: Notable Lives & Lasting Legends at the Apollo Historical Society

A special thank you to ACCL Board Member Mary Krauland for volunteering her time to help plan and coordinate the series. This program series would not have been possible without her dedication and support.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in discovering and celebrating Armstrong Countyโ€™s local history!

Weโ€™re also sharing photos from our recent May 13 program held at Appleby Manor Presbyterian Church in Ford City. Led by Katie Wolfe, Program Coordinator at the Ford City Public Library, the session explored Armstrong Countyโ€™s role in the Civil War. Participants enjoyed a presentation inside the historic church before taking part in a guided cemetery tour featuring 12 gravesites of soldiers who fought โ€” and in some cases died โ€” during the Civil War. Katie brought these powerful local stories to life at each stop along the tour.

Thank you to everyone who has joined us throughout this series as we continue discovering and celebrating Armstrong Countyโ€™s remarkable history!
