The Nellie Bly Chapter of the Questers gathered last night for our annual Christmas-around-the-world supper club where all members contributed to the feast using authentic French recipes. While studying French holiday traditions and history, members leisurely dined through a nine course meal that featured shellfish, canapés, eggs, twice-stuffed turkey, sweet peas à la française with duchess potatoes, assorted French cheeses, ladyfingers, bûche de Noel, baked pears, chocolate meringue swirls with chocolate sauce and crème chantilly along with sparkling juice and French tea featuring the fruits of Versailles. Decor included a French santon manger display, floral arrangements, and Christmas items from France. Games followed a short presentation and each member delighted in spending time together and receiving a hand-cross-stitched gift emblazoned “Joyeux Noel” to commemorate the occasion. As the Breton version of the Yule blessing says,

“Christmas log, catch fire
Let us all rejoice
Lord, give us Thy peace
And pour over us Thy blessing.

Lord, let us also
See the coming year.
And, if we are not one more,
May we not be one less .”

A splendid afternoon Quester outing to have Christmas Tea at the Victorian Lady of Academy Hill, Greensburg. Delicacies included cherry-filled scones, sugared grapes, traditional English cucumber cream-cheese sandwiches, turkey with cranberry mustard sandwiches, ham and pineapple salad on wheat, pimento cheese on whole grain, white almond-white chocolate maraschino cherry cookies, pumpkin cookies, a pecan bar, a dark chocolate truffle, dried-apple salad and delicious loose-leaf tea such as Buckingham Palace (mild Earl Grey with Jasmine notes). Always a joy to visit this tea room, especially with friends!

The Nellie Bly Chapter of the Questers attended an absolutely perfect Regional Meeting and luncheon hosted by Shaver Springs at the Indiana Country Club. We learned so much about Queen Victoria, experienced a gourmet lunch featuring Potato Leek Soup, Beef Wellington, and Cod served on a shell, and had a lovely time together. Always a joy to be around other Questers from around the state!

The Nellie Bly Chapter of the Questers hosted their annual Christmas dinner and this year the evening was based on the celebration of Christmas in Edwardian England (think Downton Abbey era). Each member cooked an authentic recipe from the time period such as: an Epiphany tart that glowed like stained glass, an English trifle, tomatoes delicately stuffed with a whole egg and cheese, spinach balls that were boiled for cooking, delicious turkey and prime rib, Yule-bread shaped like the Christ child, and many other items. We learned about the history of Christmas in England, the merry Christmas celebrations of King Arthur, King Henry, the druid winter customs, of the Puritans and Cromwell outlawing Christmas carols, feasts and even banning the making of mince pie. Also enjoyed were Christmas crackers filled with crowns and trinkets, games and great conversation!

Western Area Meeting of The Questers, the Nellie Bly Chapter hosting. Literary Tea featuring talks and displays on Louisa May Alcott (by Laura Wingard-Plank), Beatrix Potter (by Karen Wingard), Laura Ingalls Wilder (by Melody Lynn Hooks), and on tea (by Amy Stolitza) as well as literary games, an amazing talk by the International Quester president who visited from the Philadelphia area, sharing about a book brought by attendees, a tea shop where all proceeds go to Preservation and Restoration of historic landmarks (created by Kim Hood Risch), a breakfast buffet and a tea luncheon. Such a joy to see everyone!
