We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Arcadia (M1966), mate of Asha and father of the Quartz Pack's pups.

A genetically valuable wolf chosen to help strengthen the future of Mexican gray wolf recovery, Arcadia's legacy lives on through the family he helped create.

While the circumstances of his death have not yet been released, every wolf lost is a reminder that recovery is about more than numbers, it is about individuals, families, and futures.

Our thoughts are with Asha and her young pups.

Rest easy, Arcadia. 🐺

Inspiring respect for wolves and protecting the habitats they depend on is essential to recovery , and we can’t do it without you.

Our volunteers and interns are the heart of this work, especially as we head into a busy summer of events, field projects, and community programs. From guiding hikes and presenting at Big Lake, to supporting summer events, tracking wolves in the field, engaging communities, and helping behind the scenes, every contribution helps move this work forward.

No experience is necessary, just a passion for wildlife, curiosity, and a willingness to learn.

Mexican gray wolf Asha's release was delayed due to county pushback, records show.

Claire Musser, executive director of the Grand Canyon Wolf Recovery Project, said over the past three years she’s seen an upswing in pushback on the Mexican gray wolf program. She’s seen several counties adopt emergency resolutions relating to wolf activity and several groups critical of the program take trips to Washington, D.C.

“When there are depredations, you’re paying for failure at that point,” Musser said. “So, what would it mean if we invested more upfront to prevent that even happening?”

At the heart of Learning from Lobos is a simple idea: wolves are not just symbols, statistics, or species counts, they are individuals with relationships, personalities, histories, and emotional lives.

By learning their stories and helping name new wolf pups each year, students and young people are invited to move beyond fear and become part of a growing culture of attentiveness, compassion, and co-thriving that recognizes wolves as neighbors with intrinsic value and worth.

Students and young people can submit wolf pup names and stories using the form below.

🐺 317 Mexican gray wolves now roam the wild as of December 2025, and each one carries a story worth protecting.

For 21 years, GCWRP has advocated for Mexican gray wolf recovery through science, storytelling, and education.

Through our award-winning Learning from Lobos program, recognized as the STEM City 2026 Community Partner of the Year, we’ve reached more than 25,000 students and community members across Arizona.

By bringing real wolf science, field stories, and interactive STEAM education into classrooms and communities, we help inspire empathy, critical thinking, and environmental stewardship.

Every session ends with the same question:

What role can you play in recovery?
