Why are Mexican gray wolves endangered? And what can the next generation do about it?

Mexican gray wolves were nearly eradicated by government-led extermination programs in the early 1900s. By 1976, only a handful remained. Every Mexican gray wolf alive today descends from just seven founding wolves, making genetic diversity one of the greatest challenges facing their recovery.

Restoring wolf populations takes more than numbers. It means rebuilding genetic diversity, expanding their range, and creating opportunities for wolves and people to co-thrive.

LYS 2025 Project Spotlight: Northland Prep Poster Campaign

Three audiences. One mission. Protecting Mexican gray wolves through education and awareness!

Last year, students from Northland Preparatory Academy developed a poster campaign for hunters, hikers and campers, and younger students. Their project aimed to reduce wolf shootings, challenge misconceptions, and raise awareness about the ecological importance of wolves and how to coexist with them.

LYS 2025 Project Spotlight: Conservation Through Art, Culture & Indigenous Knowledge

What can happen when young people bring conservation, creativity, and cultural knowledge together?

As part of the 2025 Lobo Youth Summit, this project explored Mexican wolf advocacy through art, culture, and Indigenous collaboration in Monterrey, Mexico.
