Originally known as Suckanesset, the area now known as Falmouth was first settled in 1660 by just 12 men. This fledgling settlement grew and in 1686 was granted a Town Charter by the General Court of Plymouth Colony. Around 1690, the Town was renamed Falmouth in honor of Falmouth

, England, the port from which Bartholomew Gosnold sailed. Gosnold was the first navigator from the Old World to set foot in Falmouth and gave Cape Cod its name. Author of “America the Beautiful,” Katharine Lee Bates, was born in Falmouth Village in 1859. Falmouth’s rich history includes fishing, farming, whaling, scientific institutions and being a resort destination.
