A lifelong Fall River, Massachusetts artist volunteered 26 hours to paint a rowing center's walls — and a boat.
Fall River, meet Mj Manville Cloutier — the self-taught artist behind Mj Manville Art, based at 80 Belmont Street right here in Fall River.
Mj is a lifelong Fall River resident who works under a simple credo: "Unique. Original. Affordable." She believes original art should not be a privilege reserved for the wealthy — every person should have the chance to own a piece.
Working mainly in soft pastels, she has created over 150 commissioned pet portraits as of 2025, and she also works in watercolor, oil pastels, acrylics and colored pencil. She calls her style "realism with a sprinkling of the abstract," and her nostalgia pieces — including her Lincoln Park amusement park collection and Rocky Point Park work — are made to bring back memories.
That photo is Mj at work in Fall River: in late summer 2021 she volunteered about 26 hours painting the name, logo and murals at the Watuppa Rowing Center, including lettering this display boat "Place of Boats" — the English translation of "Watuppa." She came back in 2022 and spent about 30 more volunteer hours creating the center's indoor donor wall, and she has kept donating prints and custom pet portraits to the center's silent auctions, along with fundraisers for Saint Stanislaus School and Bishop Connolly.
Recently retired from a day job of over 35 years, she is now devoting more time to the art she has made in Fall River for over ten years — including work for corporate calendars and holiday cards.
