✨ Nearly 300 acres. Countless reasons to protect it.

Dyas Creek Nature Preserve is now the largest property owned by SALT, safeguarding a diverse landscape of pine savannas, hardwood forests, wetlands, and a rare pitcher plant bog in the Perdido River watershed.

Protected lands like this provide room for wildlife to move, native plants to thrive, and future generations to experience the natural beauty that makes coastal Alabama so special.

Thank you to Bama Buzz for highlighting this exciting milestone for conservation.

Join SALT's Land Conservation Associate Dylan Herald for a day in the field at one of SALT’s premier preserves, Fish River! This incredible property is home to a variety of rare habitats found along the Alabama Gulf Coast, including upland hardwood forests, longleaf pine savanna, forested wetlands, and of course, the beautiful Fish River itself.

As spring gives way to summer, the landscape is bursting with new growth, which means it’s time to keep our trails open, safe, and easy to navigate for guided visits! Volunteers will help with trail clearing, playing an important role in maintaining walkability directly supporting SALT’s work at the preserve.

This is a great opportunity to lend a hand behind the scenes on a truly special property.

🌿 Meet Dylan Herald, SALT’s New Land Conservation Associate 🌿

Hi everyone — I’m Dylan Herald, and I’m proud to be SALT’s new Land Conservation Associate (LCA)!

I joined SALT in February shortly after defending my thesis in coastal ecology, and I’m excited to be part of an organization working on the frontlines of conservation to protect rare and valuable habitats in areas facing increasing development pressure.

I’ve joined SALT at an exciting time. We’re actively launching new conservation projects and have recently acquired 358.6 acres across 3 properties to help protect critical habitat in South Alabama.

One property I’m especially excited about is Dyas Creek, a 283-acre preserve and one of the largest properties protected by SALT. Conserving large, connected habitats like this helps combat habitat fragmentation, allowing wildlife to move more freely and ecosystems to thrive.

We’re also looking ahead to exciting restoration efforts, including prescribed fire to restore habitat, improve biodiversity, and revitalize a 30-acre pitcher plant bog that could become one of the region’s most impressive examples of this unique ecosystem.

A heartfelt thank you to our volunteers, donors, and members — none of this would be possible without your support. Follow along to stay updated on these exciting projects as they develop! 💚

This photo was sent to us this morning by one of our board members — the day after Bald Eagle Bash.

Feels fitting.

A reminder of exactly what yesterday was all about.

To everyone who showed up, supported, sponsored, served, poured, played, and believed in this work — thank you.

Our sponsors. Our volunteers. Our incredible restaurants. Our band. Our vendors. And every single one of you who came out to celebrate with us.

You made this event what it was.

Because of you, we’re not just gathering for a great time — we’re protecting land, preserving habitat, and making a real, lasting impact on coastal South Alabama every single day.

We truly couldn’t have done it without you.
