Right now, the teams at International Bird Rescue’s two California wildlife centers are responding to an extraordinary set of challenges: seabirds struggling during a prolonged starvation event, the annual spring influx of baby birds, and an active oil spill response in Los Angeles.

“Crises do not wait for a convenient moment,” said JD Bergeron, CEO. “They often arrive at times when staff are already stretched and centers are full. Juggling multiple crises takes a community of partners, volunteers, and fellow organizations who share overflow, resources, and stand ready to work alongside us.”

The mystery is solved 🥚✨ The larger eggs belong to American Avocets. Three have hatched so far, and 15 more are still in progress.

From hatch to release, every step is focused on giving them the best chance at life in their natural habitat.

Thanks to this community, we’re already 30% of the way to our $10K matching goal! Thanks to a matching gift from Martinez Refining Company, every donation right now goes twice as far to help provide fish, medical care, and a second chance for pelicans and other waterbirds recovering in care.

Martinez Refining Company is also sponsoring this month’s live BirdCam, helping supporters get a closer look at the birds recovering behind the scenes and the care your donations make possible: https://www.birdrescue.org/birdcams/live-san-francisco-bay-center/

For 55 years, we’ve learned that effective spill response begins long before an emergency happens.

Decades of experience have shaped the systems, training, and readiness behind our work. From preparing supplies to training responders, every step helps ensure we are ready to provide wildlife with the care they need when the unexpected happens.

Talk about double bad luck. This orphaned American Kestrel chick had an unexpected start after falling from its nest and somehow ending up contaminated with oil before rescue. After arriving at Bird Rescue, our team gave this tiny patient a careful wash and plenty of meals to help get it back on track.

Now cleaned up and feeling stronger, the chick has been transferred to Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network, where it will continue receiving care before one day returning to the wild. When specialized help is needed, coordinated care makes the difference.

We recently received 20 eggs from two shorebird species, rescued from unsafe nesting areas at the Montezuma Wetlands Restoration Project. 🥚

The three smaller eggs near the center belong to Western Snowy Plovers. Can you guess who the other 17 eggs belong to? Leave your best guess below and we'll reveal the answer once one of the chicks makes its big debut! 🐣
