This photo was taken before we learned of the tragedy that unfolded following the Sem Yeto High School graduation.
At nearly the same time that four people were shot and an 18-year-old young man lost his life, The Matt Garcia Foundation was hosting a reception for the students we awarded scholarships to this year.
We spent the evening with these remarkable young people and their families, sharing pizza, wings, conversation, hope, and dreams for the future.
We talked about Matt and how deeply he believed in young people. He often reminded us that young people care about their communities, that they matter, and that they are our future. That belief continues to guide our work today.
We gave the students and their families a tour of our office and podcast room and shared that we are here to support them however we can. It was a beautiful evening filled with pride, excitement, and heartfelt conversations. Some parents spoke about the joy of watching their children move on to four-year universities, while also sharing the ache of knowing they would soon be farther from home.
As those conversations were taking place, unimaginable tragedy was unfolding on the other side of town.
There are no words.
Violence is never the answer to anything.
The loss of life, the trauma, and the ripple effects of this tragedy will be felt for years to come. To the parents, families, friends, classmates, and everyone impacted, my heart is shattered for you. As a mother who lost her son to gun violence, I know that the anguish and sadness that follow such a loss can be lifelong.
I am deeply sorry that what should have been one of the proudest moments of your lives was shattered and turned into an unfathomable nightmare.
The Matt Garcia Foundation and I will hold all of you in our hearts, thoughts, and prayers today and always.
