BIG LADY ZINNIA UPDATE
She’s officially lost 3lbs since her initial weigh in and we have achieved a body shape that isn’t completely spherical!
She has noticeably more energy and is actually able to move around now 🥹
Maybe the most important update: she can now clean her own bu****le! Go Z**i!!

This handsome toot is big girl Zinnia’s little brother, Poppy 🖤

As you can see - Poppy can’t! His eyes are very malformed due to a birth defect and he will be having surgery on Thursday to remove them.
He’s already completely blind so it’s really no loss to him, and having the sockets closed up will help reduce irritation and infection from having those wonkyballs in there ❤️‍🩹

Please consider donating towards Poppy’s surgery using the button below ⬇️

Hello new friends!
It seems that Z**i made quite an impression (and rightfully so!) The last pictures were from her first week here, so I figured y’all were due for some updated shots now that she’s down to 15lbs 🥰 she can almost reach her bu****le!! That patch of hair loss next to her tail is new - it’s from overgrooming in an attempt to reach her b***y. She’s trying so hard 😭

Some quick FAQ and fun facts that I saw pop up in the comments:
•SHE DOESN’T LOOK MORBIDLY OBESE / MY CAT IS HEAVIER / 8LBS IS TOO SMALL. I say this with all the love, but if Zinnia’s size is not shockingly large to you then you have been affected by chonky cat culture. 60% of cats are overweight/obese; we are unfortunately so used to seeing it that people often see a cat at an appropriate weight and believe they are malnourished. I saw a LOT of people in that comment section posting pictures of their “big boned” cats where the cat is overweight/obese as well. This is part of why I have been so against chonky cat culture - it has changed the public perception of normal significantly and it is not safe for the cats.

•MY VET SAYS MY CAT’S WEIGHT IS OKAY AND THEY’RE ZIZI’S SIZE. Vets are not immune to the effects of chonky culture either! I can’t tell you how many veterinarians and vet nurses I’ve known who have overweight cats! Unless your vet is a board certified veterinary nutritionist, it’s possible your cat is still overweight/obese. Another aspect of this point is that owners often take offense to honest conversations about their cat’s weight. I have seen veterinarians literally get berated over telling someone that their cat was medically obese. I understand that addressing pet weight gently may be necessary to not offend the owners, but it can also diminish the seriousness of the issue and lead people to believe their pets are fine.

•HOW DO I GET MY CAT TO LOSE WEIGHT? Unfortunately this constitutes as medical advice so we can’t really give you any specifics! In general, 200-250 calories per day is considered normal for cats to maintain their current weight (usually 1/2 cup or less of dry food per day). A board-certified veterinary nutritionist can give you more tailored advice! https://www.vetspecialists.com/find-a-specialist

•MY CAT WON’T LOSE WEIGHT BECAUSE THEY WON’T EXERCISE. If your cat is sedentary they will need less calories on the daily than an average cat. You can also try to encourage more activity with some of our fav interactive toys: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/2UIW6DSTYPPCG

•IS SHE LOSING WEIGHT TOO FAST? So, no and yes. We’ve had Z**i about a month and she’s lost 2lbs. If we were cutting her food drastically to achieve that there would be concerns about her not getting enough nutrients and that leading to other conditions, however Z**i is eating at a maintenance level. She is getting all the appropriate calories and nutrients, she was just being so horrifically overfed prior that even a normal amount of food is causing significant loss. Rest assured she will be okay!

•WHY IS SHE IN A CAGE? We are an animal rescue/shelter 🙂

•IS MY CAT FAT? If you post a picture and ask I will give you my honest opinion but if you’re questioning it the answer is probably yes SORRY

•CAN I ADOPT HER? Not yet! She still has a ways to go. We would also really like her to be adopted with her brother and he is awaiting eye surgery.

•HOW CAN I HELP THE BABIES? We have wishlists below (our primary needs are adult dry food and litter), or monetary donations can be made using the button on this post or on our website ❤️ https://www.spicycats.org/donate

I GOT CATFISHED BY A CAT
Okay not really but I agreed to take a blind cat from a city shelter (more info on him later) and they said “hey, he has a sister do you want her too?” So duh of course, come on down ma’am!
When I agreed to intake Zinnia I only saw one tightly cropped, low-res picture of her. Imagine my surprise when I pick her up and she’s built like a meatloaf on stilts.
Homegirl has SEVENTEEN POUNDS on that petite lil frame. I’m always down for a kitty Jenny Craig kind of journey, but we have never had one who was this morbidly obese. And Zinnia can’t even clean her own bu****le.

I’ve spent my entire adult life advocating against chonky cat culture due to its health risks and how does the universe repay me? Having to scrub betwixt a cat’s b***ycheeks. DAILY. She’s cooperative at least (as pictured), but it certainly was NOT in the job description.

Z**i has been here a few weeks now I’m happy to report that she has lost 2lbs! Her goal weight is around 8lbs so we have quite a ways to go, but please tell her how proud you are of her 🙂‍↕️

WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOME SUPER BUFF* VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH A PROJECT IN KINGSTON THIS WEEK - please read to the end for more information!

Meet our new friend Bugs!
Buggy was a city community cat until he was about 1 year old. He was going to be TNR’d, but it was the dead of winter and he was pretty poorly himself at the time with a broken jaw. Bugs’ family nursed him back to health and he decided he liked the cushy indoor life.

He was very loved by his family for 11 years (and still is!), but within a few short months they experienced the loss of one of Bugs’ parents, escalating health issues for his other parent, and an emergency housing crisis outside of their control. They made the difficult choice to surrender Bugs so that he wouldn’t have to experience so much uncertainty in his senior years.

Bugs has never been a particularly handleable cat so he needed a big spa day at the vet to catch up on the last few years. Buggy had a dental to remove his last 4 teeth, full senior labwork, jaw X-rays, and he needed an extensive pedicure for some very infected toenails. Thankfully he is feeling so much better! He hates his sunflower cone, but I think he looks quite handsome. If you leave him a compliment I will read them all to him and maybe he’ll decide his sunflower is a good look too 🙂‍↕️

Buggy will be part of our Old Cats Club here - even though his labs are pretty great for an old man, being mostly blind, semi-feral, and having substantial jaw misalignment means he will need some additional care. I’m hopeful that as he relaxes more, he and I will develop something that resembles friendship.

» You can support cats like Bugs by joining the Old Cats Club here: https://www.spicycats.org/old-cat-club

Buggy’s vet bill totaled $3,288.53, so any and all support is appreciated!

The home Buggy came from has a bedbug infestation (yes, that’s where his name came from - we were referring to him as “the bedbug cat” for the first day which is pretty close to his original name, so it has since stuck 😅)

Community Action Partnership Hillsborough and Rockingham Counties needs help clearing out the house in Kingston, NH this week - i.e. throwing a lot of furniture and such into a dumpster.
If you can help BEFORE MONDAY 8/17, email Stephanie ([email protected]) or call (603-668-8010 ext: 6302) for more information!
