Please welcome Josie Jakobs to Team SELT! Josie is an intern from the University of New Hampshire, joining us via the the Small Family Fellowship program. Josie is getting a true SELT smorgasbord, spending time working on trail infrastructure and maintenance, then helping out in our three weeks of SELT summer camp, with support for our menu of events sprinkled in.

Now that's a hefty helping of sumptuous SELT summer shenanigans - but we know Josie is up to it!

Last week, SELT, in partnership with Helene Hallett and the Hallett family, completed the conservation of a 10‑acre portion of the Halletts’ property in Dover.

An important piece of protection for the Great Bay watershed, the Hallett property offers significant benefits for coastal health, including 1.3 acres of ecologically important — and dwindling — salt marsh and nearly 900 feet of frontage on the tidal Cocheco River, where it joins with the Salmon Falls River to form the Piscataqua River.

Following the example and legacy of the late Ashton Hallett, one of the founders of the Strafford Rivers Conservancy (now part of SELT) and an icon of regional land conservation, the family honored his memory by donating the easement on this property. The Halletts had previously donated a 17‑acre easement from the family property in 1999.

The project was made possible through funding support from the City of Dover NH Conservation Fund and a grant from the Great Bay Resource Protection Partnership, both of which contributed toward the costs of accepting and stewarding this generous conservation easement donation.

“The City of Dover’s Open Lands Committee is grateful for the collaboration with SELT,” said Anna Boudreau, Chair of the Open Lands Committee. “We are honored to help the Hallett family reach this milestone of conserving their amazing property.”

As of this Tuesday, SELT is the proud new owner of just over 28 acres of land located off of Durham Point Road - our first owned parcel in Durham!

This property is integral to the protection of the largest block of natural lands in the coastal watershed, strengthening the nearly 3,000 acres of the Crommett and Lubberland Creek conservation areas that drain into the Little Bay south of the Oyster River. In addition, diverse wildlife species make their home in the property's upland oak-pine forest, early successional habitat, and patches of wet meadow and shrub landscape.

We are extraordinarily grateful to the Gsottschneider family, who offered a generous bargain sale price. The purchase of this property would not be possible without support from the NH Moose Plate, LCHIP, Land and Community Heritage Investment Program, Great Bay Resource Protection Partnership, New Hampshire Charitable Foundation– Great Bay 2030, and the Town of Durham New Hampshire.

And a very special thank you to our awesome partners The Nature Conservancy in New Hampshire, without whom this project would not have been possible.
