🐾 WHAT DOES “GO SLOW” REALLY MEAN WHEN YOU ADOPT A DOG? 🐾
Sharing this from one of our rescue partners because it’s such an important reminder for anyone bringing a newly adopted dog into their home. ❤️
When someone tells you to go slow, it’s not just a suggestion. It can make all the difference in helping your new family member feel safe, secure, and loved.
Your new dog has just experienced a huge life change. Everything is unfamiliar—the smells, the sounds, the people, the routines, and even the place they’re supposed to call home. You may be excited to introduce them to everyone, take them on outings, and show them their new life, but they may need something entirely different.
And we know how exciting it is to adopt a new dog! You want your friends and family to meet them, too. You want to show off your new family member and share the excitement. But please, WAIT. Give your dog time to settle in before inviting visitors over.
New people, unfamiliar voices, and extra activity can overwhelm a dog who is already trying to process a huge life change. Even a normally good, gentle dog can react out of fear when they feel stressed or trapped. A situation that could have been avoided may lead to a growl, a snap, or even a bite.
Don't put your new dog in that position. Let them feel safe in their new home first. There will be plenty of time for introductions once they’re ready. ❤️
🏡 Keep their world small at first.
🐾 Let them decompress without overwhelming them.
❤️ Allow them to approach you when they’re ready.
🤎 Don’t expect them to trust you immediately.
🚪 Hold off on visitors, outings, and introductions to new people and animals.
⏳ Remember that adjustment can take days, weeks, or even months.
Love doesn’t have to be loud or overwhelming. Sometimes, the greatest gift you can give a dog is the freedom to settle in at their own pace.
Please give newly adopted dogs the time they need. They aren’t being difficult, stubborn, or ungrateful. They’re learning how to live in a whole new world.
Go slow. Be patient. Let them decompress. Give them a chance. You may be amazed at the bond that grows when you do. 🐶❤️
