Applying takes about ten minutes on a phone.

You need a name, a way to reach you, and some honesty about where you are right now. There is no fee. We read every application that comes in.

What happens next is not dramatic. Somebody from Agape calls you. We talk about whether the house is a fit, what the weekly rent covers, and what we expect in return: meetings, chores, your share of the cleaning, testing when you are asked, and being where you said you would be. Beds go in the order men apply, qualify and finish approval. If we are full, I will tell you that rather than leave you refreshing an inbox for a fortnight.

A sober home is not treatment, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling something.

There is no clinical staff. No detox. No therapy on the premises. What there is: a bed in a furnished room, rent that covers the utilities, eight men all doing the same difficult thing at the same time, a house manager who notices, drug testing, and rules that are the same on a Friday as they are on a Tuesday.

Written down, that sounds thin. In practice it is the difference between a month of treatment holding and a month of treatment coming apart in the first week back.

To the families who call: yes, you can see the house first.

Nobody should hand over a brother or a son to an address off the internet. Come to 940 Broadway, Monday to Friday, nine to five. Walk the stairs. Look in the kitchen. Ask what happens when somebody relapses at midnight, and listen for whether the answer is specific.

Two things we will not do. We will not promise you a bed before one exists. And we will not tell you this is treatment. It is housing with structure, for men in recovery, and it works best alongside the clinical care somebody is already getting.

If you are a case manager, a discharge planner, a court or a reentry program anywhere in Greater Boston, here is what I can tell you honestly.

We house men in recovery in Everett. Furnished room, utilities, house structure, drug testing, a manager on site. Applications go through our online form and get worked in the order they come in, qualify and complete approval. I will not tell you a bed is your client's before it is, and I will not keep somebody on a list to look busy. If we are full, I would rather say so the same day.

The question I get asked most is what a house manager actually does all day.

Mostly he notices things. Who came home and when. Who has quietly stopped going to meetings and is covering for it well. Which bedroom door has been shut since Saturday. None of that shows up on a form.

The rest is logistics. Trash day. A smoke detector chirping at two in the morning. An inspector who wants to see the basement on an hour of notice.

I started Agape thinking the structure would be the hard part. The structure is the easy part. Keeping five buildings warm, legal and paid for while eight men in each one rebuild a life is the hard part, and it is the part worth doing.

This week's ask costs nothing extra, which is probably why it is the one we keep forgetting to mention.

It works on gift cards. You buy a card at full face value for a shop you were already going to use. Groceries, gas, Amazon, a coffee place, a restaurant. The card is worth exactly what you paid for it, you spend the same money you were going to spend anyway, and a percentage comes back to Agape. The difference is paid by the retailer, not by you.

What it buys, concretely: ten drug test cups run about thirty-five dollars. A household doing its ordinary grocery shop through the marketplace for a month gets most of the way there without opening its wallet one extra time.

Fifty households doing their normal shopping this way beats chasing one large check. It is slower. It also does not stop.

What the weekly fee covers, since nobody in this line of work ever itemises it.

A furnished bed in a shared room. Utilities. A house manager. House meetings, a chore list, a curfew, drug testing. Other men in the same position down the hall, which does more work than any rule written on a wall. And a phone that gets answered at one in the morning, because one in the morning is when it rings.

What it does not cover: food, transport, or clinical treatment. We are housing. We are not a program and we do not claim to be one.

The fee is not profit. It is what keeps five houses in Everett open, and most weeks it is close.

And if the fee is the thing standing between you and applying, apply anyway and ask. I cannot promise funding and I am not going to pretend otherwise. I would still rather have the conversation than lose somebody to an assumption.

A sober home is not treatment. It is worth saying plainly, because the two get confused constantly and the confusion costs people time they do not have.

Treatment is clinical. Detox, inpatient, outpatient, counselling, medication. That is care, delivered by clinicians.

A sober home is housing. A bed in a house with rules. No substances, chores, house meetings, drug testing, a curfew, and other men in the same position down the hall. There is no clinician on staff here. We are not a program and we do not claim to be one.

That combination is the whole point. People finish thirty days of treatment and go back to the same room in the same apartment with the same people, and the thirty days evaporates. A sober home is somewhere else to go.

Families ask whether they can see the house before their son moves in. The answer is yes, and it is always yes.

940 Broadway, Everett, Monday to Friday, nine to five. Call first so somebody is there, and we will walk you through a house. The rooms. The kitchen. Where the chore list is on the wall. What the curfew actually is, rather than what a website says it is.

Some families come without the person who would be living there. That is fine, and it is often the right order.

What will not happen on that tour is a promise of a bed. Beds go in the order people apply, qualify and complete approval, and nobody can tell you today who will be ready on Friday. Better to hear that standing in a hallway than to read it later in small print.
