To everyone who joined us for our Juneteenth celebration, we hope the event felt seamless. Behind the scenes, however, the planning committee received heartbreaking news that Jackie had been taken into custody by ICE.

We were stunned and deeply saddened, yet had to pull ourselves together because the event still needed to happen. Jackie was our lead sound technician, responsible for managing all music and audio for the performances. We now have updates on what he needs, and if you’re able to contribute in any way, it would mean a great deal. ❤️

Thank you to the members of our Malden community who stepped in that day to help ensure everything remained peaceful—you know who you are.

Jackie Kamwendo has spent his life being the person others lean on. To the Malawia… Miya Longwe needs your support for Support Jackie Kamwendo's Legal Defense

📣 Juneteenth PERFORMER HIGHLIGHT!

We are thrilled to welcome a new performing artist to Malden Juneteenth this year, Larry Nelson a.k.a. LX The Artist! LX The Artist understands the importance of words, as he meticulously writes out his expressions in the form of poetry, spoken word, R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul and Gospel.
While on stage, he transports the audience to the depths of melody, melancholy, mischief and militance, reaching for your soul to connect in the process.
LX The Artist knows that true change starts from within and spreads from person to person. With his skin as an immediate decision for some, he blends “Peace” with “By Any Means” and is ready to engage this Juneteenth

📣 Juneteenth PERFORMER HIGHLIGHT!

Flawless Formation Step Team (FFST) started in November 2025 and is made up of 14 Salemwood students from grades 7 and 8. FFST is the first known middle school step team in Malden. Advisors Ms. Clarence (Grade 8 ESL Teacher) and Ms. Iliana (Salemwood FTO President) created the team after a session of open gym, where they noticed a group of students playfully dancing. Ms. Iliana asked the girls if they knew what stepping was, and a few students demonstrated some moves. Ms. Iliana offered to be their adult supervisor under one condition: the students had to recruit a dedicated group of interested peers.

FFST is entirely student-driven; the members created their own team name and logo, choreographed all of their own routines, and organized fundraisers to raise money for uniforms. Following in the footsteps of the MHS A.O. Step Team, FFST has been working closely with the high schoolers to refine their skills, with most members looking forward to trying out for the high school team during their freshman year. FFST has gained widespread popularity and is frequently invited to perform at community events around Malden.

FFST members include: Mariah (Co-Captain), Berveline (Captain), Makyah (Co-Captain), Stacy, Nyesha, Naima, Wejdan, Somairah, Isabely, Brittany, Iliana, Leyma, Leika
