From the mound at UE to Major League Baseball, Kyle Freeland ’15 has built one of the most distinguished careers in Purple Aces Baseball history.

During his time at UE, Kyle earned five All-America honors, was named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year, and became the eighth overall selection in the 2014 MLB Draft.

Three years later, the Denver native made his Major League debut with his hometown Colorado Rockies.

Kyle’s connection to UE has remained strong. In 2025, the University retired his No. 21 jersey, permanently recognizing his place among the program’s greats.
Kyle and Ashley (Chrisman) Freeland ’15 also made an approximately $3 million gift to create the Freeland Clubhouse, the largest philanthropic gift in UE Athletics history and an investment in future Purple Aces.

Crystal (Stock) England ’04 built her UE legacy one mile at a time, pairing elite performance with determination that has carried far beyond competition.

From 2001 to 2003, Crystal earned three consecutive Cross Country-Only Schools All-America honors and established herself as one of the top women’s 6K performers in University of Evansville history.

She credits Coach Don Walters and her UE mentors with shaping not only her success as an athlete, but also the person she became after graduation.

After earning her Psychology degree from UE, Crystal continued competing at the University of Southern Indiana, where she became a three-time NCAA All-American while completing her Master of Social Work.

Today, she is a licensed clinical social worker, military spouse, and mother of four, with plans to open her own therapy practice.

The discipline and resilience that defined Crystal’s running career continue to shape her work, service, and life beyond the course.

We are proud to welcome Crystal (Stock) England ’04 into the UE Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 2026 class and celebrate a legacy of achievement and perseverance.

For Carol Lynch ’74, a career in education became a lifelong commitment to helping young people grow and succeed.

A member of Harlaxton College’s first class and a graduate of UE’s Elementary Education program, Carol built her career around teaching and mentorship. Her service, however, has reached far beyond the classroom.

Carol was a founding board member of Youth First and has spent decades supporting its mission. Her impact is reflected in the Carol Lynch Advocate of Youth First Award, which recognizes students who champion Youth First in their schools and communities.

She has also remained deeply involved with Chi Omega through alumnae leadership, continuing to support the chapter and its connection to UE.
Her story reflects sustained service, mentorship, and a belief in the potential of the next generation.

Randy Alsman’s connection to the University of Evansville shows that belonging to the UE community extends far beyond where a degree was earned.

His relationship with the University began early. His mother earned a master’s degree from UE and worked on the Library staff, and Randy remembers spending time on campus as a young student attending summer band camps.

After a successful career with organizations including PricewaterhouseCoopers, Mead Johnson, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Donaldson Capital Management, Randy returned to Evansville and became a dedicated UE volunteer leader.

He has served as a guest lecturer, Board of Visitors chair, trustee, committee vice chair, and co-chair of the FORWARD campaign, bringing experience and a deep commitment to UE’s future.

Across each role, one theme has remained constant: Randy’s confidence in UE students and the future they are building.

Michael Grassmyer ’13 and Dr. Kate (Upton) Grassmyer ’11 followed very different professional paths, but both trace an important part of their foundation back to UE: curiosity, discipline, research, and mentorship.

As a student-athlete on the Men’s Swimming team, Michael balanced competition with academics, campus involvement, and enzyme-kinetics research. That experience helped sharpen the analytical skills he later carried into a career in client service and financial operations.

Kate built on her UE foundation in chemistry, mathematics, physics, and research by earning a PhD in Chemistry from Caltech and completing postdoctoral work at Indiana University Bloomington. She went on to become a research scientist at Eli Lilly.

Their relationship with UE has continued well beyond graduation. Today, Michael and Kate give back through service on the Sciences Advisory Board, helping support the next generation of students and scholars.

Sondra Matthews ’77 has spent decades preserving the stories, people, and history that define Evansville’s Black community.

A Mass Communications graduate and one of the first recipients of UE’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship, Sondra built a career rooted in journalism, history, and community. In 1983, she cofounded Our Times, which became the Tri-State’s only Black-owned newspaper and an important record of Black civic and cultural life in Evansville.

Her impact reaches beyond the newsroom. She helped found the Evansville African American Museum, preserved the Our Times archive at UE Libraries, and continues supporting Black-owned businesses and organizations across the community.
Her legacy is written into the city itself: the 500 block of South Garvin Street now bears the honorary name Sondra L. Matthews Way.

For Elizabeth “Liz” Kelly ’01, the University of Evansville was a place where curiosity, global experiences, and meaningful relationships helped shape the direction of her life.

Liz studied International Studies and Political Science at UE. She was also a resident assistant on Moore Hall’s international floor, where she built friendships with students from around the world. Her interest in other cultures extended beyond campus as well. After spending time in Belgium as an exchange student during high school, she returned there for a semester through UE’s study abroad program.

Today, Liz is a psychotherapist and author with more than 14 years of experience supporting professionals through grief, life transitions, stress, burnout, depression, and anxiety. Her work focuses on providing thoughtful and culturally responsive care while helping people navigate some of the most challenging periods of their lives.

In 2024, Liz reached one of the biggest milestones of her career with the publication of her first book, “This Book Is Cheaper Than Therapy: A No Nonsense Guide to Improving Your Mental Health.” The book has since become available in 13 countries and 12 languages, reaching readers around the world.

Her commitment to helping others also extends into her community. Liz volunteers with the mental health team for Camp Forget Me Not and Camp Erin DC through The Wendt Center for Loss and Healing. The program provides a supportive environment for children who are grieving the loss of a loved one.

Looking back on her time at UE, Liz remembers walking across campus and stopping to talk with Dr. Gugin, one of her favorite Political Science professors. She credits UE with teaching her to think critically, appreciate different perspectives, and approach the world with curiosity.

Her advice to future alumni reflects that same mindset, “Follow your curiosity rather than trying to find your passion.”

For Liz, UE was more than a university. It was a community that gave her opportunities to grow, explore the world, and develop the confidence to create a meaningful path of her own.

Once an Ace always an Ace.
