We are thrilled to announce our first three recipients of the Harvey Pranian High School Art Scholarship: Daisy Hebert (slide 2), Sophia Kwok (slide 3) & Lily Vernon (slide 4). This scholarship is open to Evanston high school seniors who plan to pursue the arts after graduation.

This is the inaugural year of the scholarship, and after learning of the passing of YEA! founder Harvey Pranian in April, we made the decision to honor his legacy and lifelong passion for youth arts advocacy by renaming it the Harvey Pranian High School Arts Scholarship. Through this scholarship, we will continue to celebrate his legacy by uplifting and empowering the next generation of artists.

The scholarship awards will be presented on May 8th at Open Studio Project’s Gallery 901, where two of the recipients, Daisy and Sophia, will be exhibiting their work throughout the month of May. Opening reception is TONIGHT! 6-8pm. 💫

In the coming weeks, masonry work will begin to prepare the wall for our new mural on Main Street!
We’re so excited to get things started, but we couldn’t let work begin on something new without taking the time to commemorate what was.

In 1993, legendary art teacher Carla Kinney-Philips and students from Nichols Middle School worked together to create the original mural on Main Street.

Carla recently stopped by the studio to share more about the process of painting the mural. Let us know in the comments – do you remember when the mural was first created? What was your favorite thing about it?
