Who does this?? 💫

On May 12, parents in Santa Clara County showed up at a Board of Supervisors budget hearing, pleading with the board not to cut funding for Parent Cafés. 🙏🏽

They arranged childcare, took time off work, stood at a microphone in front of county officials, and spoke (many in their non-native languages) about how much Parent Cafés meant to them.

So who does this? Parents who have had their lives changed for the better, that’s who. 💞

Swipe to hear what they said, and why Cafés are worth fighting for.👇🏽

As we recognize National Foster Care Month, we're reminded that the most lasting impact often comes through relationships.

In her latest blog, *The Seed My Mama Planted*, Greishen Rodriguez, Associate Director of Child Welfare Programs and Training & Technical Assistance Provider at Be Strong Families, shares a heartfelt reflection on the foster mother she calls Mama—the woman whose love, care, and presence helped shape her life long after she left care.

Greishen's story is a powerful reminder that while resources and services matter, so do the people who make youth feel seen, safe, and valued. One caring adult can plant a seed of hope, belonging, and resilience that continues to grow for years to come.

This National Foster Care Month, we honor foster parents, caregivers, and supportive adults who show up with love and consistency—and the lasting difference they make in the lives of children and youth.

"At first I imagined there might be freedom in not knowing..."
"Cancer is a signal misfired, a boundary blurred…"
"With my eyelashes and my nose hairs went the last illusion…"
"Today, cancer feels like a spoonful of peanut butter…"
"The scar is not absence. It is a horizon line…"

These are lines written by Kathy, our co-founder, CEO, and lifelong wordsmith. Diagnosed with cancer last year, she's fighting and writing her way through cancer treatment and recovery.

Maybe you or someone you know has been there, too. A mother, a leader, an advocate, now reckoning with the life-bomb: cancer.

Foster parents don’t just need appreciation. They need connection, community, and spaces where they can be real about the joys and challenges of fostering.

In this powerful guest blog, Be Strong Families’ Senior Director of Programs, Robyn Harvey reflects on 25 years as a foster parent, the circles of support that helped sustain her, and why meaningful connection—not just training—is what truly helps foster parents keep going.

“Connection creates clarity. Clarity creates confidence. And confidence? That turns into advocacy.”

As we recognize National Foster Parent Appreciation Month, this is a reminder that supporting foster parents means building spaces where they feel seen, heard, and surrounded.
