Today we recognize Juneteenth, the day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States and a milestone in our nation's ongoing journey toward freedom and equality.

At St. Vincent de Paul Society of Lane County, we believe strong communities are built when people are treated with dignity, respect, and opportunity. We join our neighbors in reflecting on this important day and the history it represents.

Happy Juneteenth.

We want to give a big thank you to for their donation of custom-made garden beds and starter plants for the First-Place Family Center and Night Shelter Annex! The donation of these beds are going to be a great asset to give children in our First Place Kids program the opportunity to learn how to plant and tend to their own gardens!

KLCC recently visited our clothing sorting facility on Seneca Rd. in Eugene to learn more about the efforts St. Vincent de Paul Lane County makes to divert textile waste from landfills.

All clothing donated to St. Vinnie's ends up at the clothing sorting facility where it goes through multiple rounds of sorting to find the best method of reuse! The highest quality clothing ends up in our thrift stores on the unit priced racks or the star racks. Items that are not selected during the first round of sorting are then sorted again for sale in our "distressed" sections or are repurposed as "upsmart" products like the Suspish merch, Slip & Dyed, and more.

Finally, items that are not selected for the regular racks or Upsmart are sorted one last time to find clothing that is no longer suited for wear but can be cut and packaged into Bag O' Rags which we offer in our crafting departments.

We will share the full story which features interviews with the key staff members in the clothing department when it comes out! Stay tuned!

Chelisa recently had the opportunity to share more about the work she does with St. Vincent de Paul's work experience clients for a new KLCC feature coming soon!

Many managers and executive staff with St. Vincent de Paul actually began their careers as supported work experience clients, including our director of store operations!

Our incredible Business Development Coordinator Kelsey recently presented to the Eugene Area Chamber of Commerce to educate local business leaders about the fascinating world of mattress recycling.

The group asked great questions, and it was a really engaging conversation! St. Vincent de Paul Lane County actually founded the nation's first viable mattress recycling program back in the 1990s and is still among the largest mattress recyclers in the nation with more than 500,000 units recycled annually.
