On June 30th and July 1st, Wallowa Resources, in partnership with OSU Extension and The Nature Conservancy, invited stockmanship educator Curt Pate to teach an Effective Stockmanship Clinic hosted at the Lightning Bolt Ranch. Attendance was excellent, with participants from near and far, gaining hands-on experience in gathering and sorting cattle in a low-stress manner. We want to thank everyone who helped pull this clinic together and The Lightning Bolt Ranch for hosting; it was a great couple of days!

The Monitoring Crew has been hard at work in the woods. They began with First Foods plots in May and early June, working in collaboration with Oregon State University, the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation, and the Nez Perce Tribe. They then moved to upland forest plots on the Wallowa-Whitman and Umatilla National Forests. The goal of this monitoring is to measure the effects of forest restoration on things like wildlife habitat, fire risk, culturally important plants, and conifer density. We are in year five of this ten-year project, with intentions to keep it going long after!

The 2026 high school internship season is off and running! In less than a month, this year's interns have already delved into forest monitoring, learned about watershed management and water rights, assisted with trail work, and more. They will continue with stewardship projects from range ecology to Firewise communities and more through the rest of the summer!

The 4th Annual Wallowa County Firewise Roundup, held on June 29th, brought together community members for practical, hands-on wildfire preparedness education. Hosted by the South Wallowa Lake Firewise Community, the event provided residents with practical tools and knowledge to better prepare their homes and communities for wildfire season through fire extinguisher training and inspections, a presentation on wildfire incident management, and interactive workstations. We hope to see you at next year's roundup!
