Honoring the Memory of FF/EMT Leroy Murphy

Today, we pause to honor and remember Firefighter/EMT Leroy Murphy, who passed away on October 20, 2013.

On the morning of October 19, 2013, while participating in training exercises at Englewood Station 99, Leroy suddenly fell ill. Despite fighting valiantly over the next 24 hours, he passed away surrounded by the thoughts and prayers of his brothers and sisters in service.

Leroy was not only a dedicated public servant committed to protecting our community, but also an extraordinary person both inside and outside the firehouse. His character, camaraderie, and selfless devotion to duty left a lasting mark on our department.

We ask our community to join us today in remembering Leroy’s sacrifice and keeping his family, friends, and fellow firefighters in your thoughts.

Fall & Winter Fire Safety Checklist: Is Your Home Ready for the Colder Months?

As the colder weather approaches, the Englewood Fire Department wants to make sure your home stays safe, warm, and secure. Before turning up the heat, take a few minutes to complete this quick safety checklist:

• Test Smoke & CO Detectors: Test your smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms monthly and replace batteries at least once a year. If you use gas or fuel-burning appliances, CO detectors are essential.

• Service Your Furnace & Change Filters: Have your heating system inspected annually by a qualified professional. Don't forget to clean or replace your furnace filters regularly to ensure proper airflow and prevent overheating.

• Practice Heater Safety: Keep space heaters at least 3 feet away from anything flammable (curtains, bedding, furniture). Always plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet. Never use an extension cord or power strip and turn them off when leaving the room or going to sleep.

• Don't Overload Outlets: Heavy electrical loads during the fall and winter months can lead to electrical fires. Avoid plugging multiple high-wattage appliances into a single outlet or extension cord.

• Clean Chimneys & Fireplaces: Have your chimney inspected and professionally cleaned annually to remove creosote buildup, a leading cause of chimney fires. Always use a sturdy screen to catch sparks.

We’re here to help keep your home and family safe before an emergency ever happens. Did you know our team offers these free and essential community safety services?

Child Safety Seat Inspections: Proper installation saves lives! Certified technicians at our stations can inspect or help install your child’s car seat to ensure your little ones are riding safely.

Smoke Alarms: Ensure your home is protected with working smoke detectors. With an established program through the Red Cross, we can provide replacement smoke detectors.

CPR Classes and First Aid: Adult, child, and infant CPR/AED/First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) classes to residents, local businesses, and other local organizations. The classes follow the American Safety & Health Institute guidelines.
