“Families serve, too!” That was the powerful message shared by Dr. Geri Maples during this week’s Northmont Rotary meeting. Dr. Maples spoke about the Ohio Chapter of Blue Star Families, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting military and veteran families and connecting them with their communities. She shared how her husband Robert’s service during Operation Iraqi Freedom inspired her involvement with the organization.
Dr. Maples highlighted the tremendous growth of the Ohio Chapter, from approximately 500 families in February 2020 to more than 10,000 today, along with the organization’s continued expansion across the country. She also discussed the unique challenges military families face, including food insecurity, which affects an estimated one in four military families. Through programs focused on food assistance, employment opportunities, family connections, and community support, Blue Star Families works to ensure that those who serve our country—and their families—have the resources they need to thrive.
