The Comfort Cub The Comfort Cub Story

After my son George died, my heart hurt so much and my arms felt so empty. It's not only the mother who suffers though. Thank you. Marcella

However, I found that when I held a weighted object close to my chest, the pain in my heart and aching in my arms immediately went away. I began to research and found out that both of these physical symptoms can be common after the loss of a child. At that time there were no medical terms for these physical symptoms, but now it is recognized as a medical condition called "Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy"

(ICD 9- 429.83) for the aching in the heart and "Empty Arm Syndrome" for the pain in the arms. I felt inspired and compelled to create a weighted teddy bear for others who were grieving a similar loss. I wanted to make sure no other mothers left the hospital empty-handed and broken hearted the way I did. While it is no substitute for the loss of a child, it does help ease the pain of empty arms. Fathers, siblings and even grandparents are in pain too. I have received many letters and stories about how The Comfort Cub helped ease their pain as well. Please share with those who may benefit.

A man from a youth program that works with two of the kids injured in the shooting came to pick up two Comfort Cubs for the kids in the hospital. He returned asking for 3 more: 1 for his program, and two for the siblings. -Rita R.

I wanted to share with you a little something I am most grateful for. When I arrived at the mosque (The Islamic Center of San Diego) last Friday where we were handing out Comfort Cubs to the Muslim community, I was a little nervous as I have never been to a mosque before. I felt awkward, not knowing the customs and what to expect. I did a little research and wore a long dress that covered my ankles and wore a long sleeve shirt under my dress to cover my arms and a scarf on my head out of respect for their culture. Luckily, when I got there I met the Imams daughter and son in law. They were both so kind and friendly. But then I had something very special happen. An older gentleman, I did not get his name, came up to me and said the customary greeting which I had never heard before “As-salamu alaykum” ( “peace be upon you”) and gave me this little piece of candy. It immediately brought a smile to my face and it made me feel most welcome and at ease. I was so touched by this very small gesture. I recognized the candy right away as it was one of my very favorite as a kid. I put the candy in my pocket and thought I can’t wait to eat that later. However, I forgot about it and when I got home I put it on my desk. And now several days have passed and I can’t bring myself to eat it. You know why? Because every time I look at it it’s a reminder of the very special day I shared with the Muslim community and the kindness that was shared with me by a man who was grieving but took the time to show me a small kindness. This little gesture has made a big impact on me. I’m seriously thinking about framing it as a special reminder about how a little bit of kindness goes a long way. 🩷- marcella

We are blessed to partner with Alex as she raises funds for First Candle. This organization supports SIDS and Sudden Unexpected Infant Death with bereavement services to families. Alex will be running the NYC Marathon and we are blessed to provide her with Comfort Cubs for her July fundraising event. Her son Noah was born at just 24 wks weighing 1.1 lb. So she wants nothing more than to support those going through such traumatic circumstances. Her daughter decided this tea party was the best way to welcome their Comfort Cub to the family! Watch for updates on Alex’s journey. 🧸💜

Following the devastating events of this past week, our hearts have been entirely with our neighbors at the San Diego Islamic Center.
This week, The Comfort Cub delivered our weighted therapeutic bears to over 450 families there. We are incredibly grateful and humbled to have been invited into such a sacred, tender moment of healing. Thank you for allowing us to stand with you.
May these cubs bring a sense of tangible comfort, a release of anxiety, and a constant reminder that this community stands united beside you.🙏🏽🩷🕌🩷🧸🩷
