🐾 Meet Buster! 🐾

If you’re looking for a dog that’s equal parts brains, beauty, and best friend, allow us to introduce Buster!

Buster is a one-year-old Aussie mix with a heart as big as his fluffy coat. He recently arrived at the shelter, so we’re still getting to know him, but one thing is already crystal clear: this boy is sweet as can be. We’ve also been told that he absolutely loves kids and has a friendly, easygoing personality that makes him a joy to be around.

Like many herding breeds, Buster is incredibly intelligent and thrives when he has a job to do. He isn’t the type of dog who wants to spend all day lounging on the couch. He’ll be happiest with an active family that enjoys walks, hikes, training, adventures, or other activities that keep both his mind and body engaged. Aussies and similar breeds are famous for their loyalty, trainability, and eagerness to be involved in everything their people do.

Buster’s future family should also be prepared for regular grooming. His gorgeous double coat will require routine brushing and professional grooming appointments to keep him looking and feeling his best.

Because Buster is still young, smart, and energetic, we’re looking for adopters who understand herding breeds or are willing to learn. These dogs are wonderful companions, but they do best with guidance, structure, training, and plenty of positive outlets for their energy.

As for other dogs and cats, he is brand new to the shelter so we’re still learning about Buster and don’t have enough information yet to say how he feels about them.

Buster’s adoption fee is $200 and he comes:
✔️ Neutered
✔️ Current on vaccines
✔️ Heartworm tested negative
✔️ On flea and tick prevention
✔️ Microchipped

Think Buster might be the missing piece of your family? Apply today at EffinghamCountyHumaneSociety.org

I don’t know how else to say this.

We are in trouble.

Three days ago, a wonderful supporter sponsored the adoption fee for EVERY cat in our main cat room. Every single one. The post was shared like crazy! 90,000 views!

We hear it every time we make a post about being full, “If you’d just make them free, they’d get adopted.”

Well…they’re free.

Not one application has come in for a single sponsored cat.

Not one.

Meanwhile, in the last week alone, we’ve posted over 25 kittens available for adoption. Only four have approved adopters, and three of those were the fluffy ones everyone falls head over heels for.

The problem is that those kittens aren’t even here yet.

They’re still in foster homes.

And we still have more than 10 kittens waiting to be photographed and posted.

Within the next couple of weeks, all of those kittens will be old enough to come back to the shelter.

We have nowhere to put them.

Nowhere.

Fostering only works if animals move through the system. Our fosters stepped up during kitten season because they believed it would be temporary. They have obligations of their own. We cannot keep asking them to absorb more and more animals indefinitely because there is no end in sight.

At the same time, the phone keeps ringing.

The messages keep coming.

Found kittens.

Pregnant cats.

Friendly strays.

Abandoned litters.

Owner surrenders.

People needing help.

And every single day we are forced to say the words we hate most:

“We don’t have room.”

If you’ve ever wondered why shelters and rescues constantly beg people to spay and neuter, this is why.

This is what it looks like when the number of animals needing help far exceeds the number of people willing or able to adopt.

Our application is not impossible. It’s one page. We ask for a good veterinary history because it demonstrates a pattern of responsible care. We require current pets to be altered and vaccinated because we are trying to set our animals up for success and keep them safe. We work hard to match personalities and lifestyles because we want adoptions to last forever.

We’re not looking for perfection.

We’re looking for people willing to give these animals a chance.

Right now we need adopters.

Desperately.

If you can’t adopt, please share. Comment. Interact with our posts. Tell your friends. Bring someone to the shelter. The extra reach matters. The monetization helps. Donations help. Every little bit helps.

We are tired.

We are overwhelmed.

We are scared.

And we need this community now more than ever.

Please look through all of our fully sponsored cats below and consider adding one or two to your home.

Meet the new kid in the building. This super sweet boy was just surrendered. We are all already so in love with him. He is a true wiggle butt and giving us so much love. He will be posted tomorrow. Right now we are too busy loving on him to get that accomplished.

These three German Shepherds are still looking for their forever homes. Crystal and Glacier are living in foster homes working on their confidence and trust in humans.

Crystal and Glacier will definitely need a human who will allow them to go at their own pace. Children, loud noises and anything out of their routine is very scary. Patience will go a long way with these two. Both of them are housebroken and do well with dogs and cats. The best description for an adopter is someone who will accept them as they are and love them no matter what.

Frostine on the other hand has blossomed into a silly girl. She does have some fears still but she has realized that humans can be ok. She will still need patience when introducing new things but she certainly has more courage than her brother and sister.

Please share so we can find the perfect person for these beautiful souls. They deserve the best lives ever!

Bowie has patiently been waiting for this day. He has finally completed his heartworm treatment and is ready for new adventures. We are so happy that this boy found his way to us so we could help him find his happily eve after.

Plus his new family are repeat adopters and that always makes us happy. Their dog they adopted years ago is a heartworm survivor as well.
