AREA COUNTY SCHOOLS PARTICIPATE IN LAND USE COUNCIL 10 ENVIROTHON COMPETITION
Cumberland, Effingham, Fayette, Jasper and Shelby County High Schools participated in the Council 10 Envirothon competition Thursday April 9th at the Ballard Nature Center near Altamont.
Stew-Stras High School science team #1 placed 1st overall in the contest for Council 10. St. Elmo High School FFA placed 1st for the FFA teams and 2nd overall. Stew-Stras science team #2 placed 3rd. Awards were also given for the highest test scores in each element category. Stew-Stras Science #1 won the Aquatics category, Shelbyville FFA won the Forestry category. The Cumberland FFA team won the wildlife category. St. Elmo science team won Soils along with the 5th element category. This year's fifth element topic was Non-Point Source Pollution: It Begins at Home. This category changes each year.
Effingham County schools that participated in the Envirothon included, Altamont High School, Effingham High School and Beecher City High School.
The Beecher City Science team took first place for Effingham County. Members of the team are Isaac Miller, Grace Wright, Isabella Davis, Gage Hart and Porter Lilly. The team advisor is Vanessa Doedtman.
Each team member received an Envirothon t-shirt. The shirts are provided by their respective county Soil & Water Conservation Districts.
The Envirothon is a national contest that starts with a regional or local county meet. The winner of that even then competes at the state competition, which is held at the Allerton, 4-H Memorial Park in Monticello, IL, April 29th & 30th, 2026.
Five member teams are tested on five subjects pertaining to natural resource conservation. This year topics were:
Aquatics, presented by Andrew Walker, Resource Conservationist, Shelby County Soil & Water.
Forestry, presented by Mary Grapperhause
Soils, presented by Chad Glick, Resource Conservationist, Fayette County Soil & Water.
Wildlife, presented by Tyler Kimes, Wildlife Biologist, Pheasants Forever.
5th Element, presented by Brad Tarr, Resource Conservationist, Jasper County Soil & Water.
