🥾 A group of adventurous volunteers kicked off their weekend with us on Friday by planting the Quiet Waters Park shorelines!
🐢 These new plants will help hold the sand and soil in place, fighting erosion while providing valuable marsh habitat for local wildlife in Harness Creek.

🌿 Welcome to the team, Cara! 🌊

We’re excited to welcome Cara Kamoie, our new 2026–2027 Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps (CCCC) member, to the Arundel Rivers team! Cara will spend the coming year working alongside our staff and getting hands-on experience protecting and restoring our local waterways.

Here’s a little more from Cara:

“My name is Cara Kamoie, and I am thrilled to join the Arundel Rivers Federation as the 2026–2027 Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps Member! I was born and raised in Annapolis and graduated from Dickinson College in 2026, where I majored in Environmental Science and minored in English.

While in college, I worked as a teaching assistant, research assistant, and sustainability intern, developing my passion for fieldwork, community, and education. My undergraduate research was grounded in the South Mountain region of Pennsylvania, where I studied vegetative communities and the lasting impacts of human industry on the environment.

I’m excited to return to Maryland, and I can’t wait to learn, grow, and serve our waterways!”

8/27/26 Bacteria Results! We had 6 sites fail this week: 2 on the South River, 4 on the West and Rhode Rivers, and none on the mainstem.

⚠️ This is a test for enterococcus, an indicator of E. coli. Samples are collected Thursday mornings and processed by Anne Arundel Community College. Please note that bacteria levels can increase after major rain events. Arundel Rivers follows EPA guidelines and the recommended threshold of 104cfu/100mL for recreational swimming. Please remember to follow the golden rules of swimming.

What a summer! 🌊☀️🔬

Since June, the Arundel Rivers Education team has engaged more than 1,400 young scientists across the South, West, and Rhode River watersheds through our Summer of Science camp program.

From catching critters and exploring local habitats to getting their hands dirty picking up more than 60 pounds of litter, campers spent the summer learning, exploring, and building meaningful connections to the waterways in their own communities.

8/20/26 Bacteria Results! We had 1 site fail this week: Galesville Wharf on the West River. Please note that these samples were collected Thursday morning BEFORE the major rains we had last night. Samples need to incubate overnight, which is why there is a lag in sharing results. This bacteria tends to increase after major rainfall events.

Our Community Engagement and Education Manager, Mairin Corasaniti will be presenting at the Captain Avery Museum about resilient gardening and our Bay Loving Landscapes program! Join her for a Lunch & Learn where she will explore landscaping choices to support healthy ecosystems and rivers. 🌱🌊🌻

It’s our final week with our Education & Outreach Summer Intern, Sydney Hall before she heads back to school! 💚 As we wrap up an incredible summer, we asked Sydney to reflect on her time with Arundel Rivers. Here’s what she had to say:

“As the Education & Outreach Intern at Arundel Rivers Federation this summer, I’ve had the chance to take part in so many amazing opportunities. From guiding environmental education explorations at YMCA Camp Letts and Marshall Hope Learning Center to harvesting submerged aquatic vegetation to process and collect its seeds, I have truly had the summer of a lifetime.

The best part of the summer was, without a doubt, my time spent at Camp Letts and Marshall Hope Learning Center. Getting to engage campers in activities that not only teach them to respect and appreciate our natural world, but also allow them to have fun and view learning as a privilege rather than a chore, was so special.

I am forever grateful to my mentor, Mairin Corasaniti, for giving me guidance and support through the months I’ve spent at Arundel Rivers. I also cannot thank the entire Arundel Rivers team enough for giving me this once-in-a-lifetime experience and for offering so much kindness and expertise along the way.”

Sydney, we can’t thank YOU enough! Your enthusiasm, hard work, and dedication to helping young people connect with the natural world made a lasting impact this summer. We’re so glad you were part of the Arundel Rivers team! 🌿💙
