Help us welcome Sydney, our Education & Outreach Intern! 👋🌊

Sydney is going into her junior year at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. An environmental science major on track to obtaining a GIS certificate, Sydney intends to concentrate her focus on how land use and development impacts local ecosystems.

She hopes in her time at Arundel Rivers to offer a new perspective to the Education and Outreach program, as well as learn more about the environmental nonprofit world!

We're thrilled to have her on the team!

Last week, our Chesapeake Conservation and Climate Corps member and a shadow student from Key School joined our partners at Chesapeake Bay Foundation to place baby oysters, or oyster spat, on oyster reef balls that will placed at our restoration project on the Quiet Waters Park shoreline!

They planted 4 million (yes, you read that right! 4 million!!) oysters on the reef balls, and they have been growing safely in large tanks until they are ready to be placed in the South River. Oysters help filter the water, provide structural support for shoreline resilience, and create habitat for all of the critters who call the rivers home. We are thrilled to bring these Bay superstars into the South River!🦪💙

5/28/26 Bacteria Results! We had 9 sites fail this week: 3 on the South River, 3 on the West and Rhode Rivers, and 3 on the mainstem.

⚠️ This is a test for enterococcus, an indicator of E. coli. Samples are collected Thursday mornings and processed by Anne Arundel Community College. Please note that bacteria levels can increase after major rain events. Arundel Rivers follows EPA guidelines and the recommended threshold of 104cfu/100mL for recreational swimming. Please remember to follow the golden rules of swimming.

🌩️ Don’t swim after a major rain event
🤕 Don’t swim with any open cuts or wounds
📲 Always check SwimGuide.org before swimming

Have you seen the shoreline transformation at Franklin Point State Park? 🌊

This shoreline restoration is a beautiful example of how nature-based solutions can protect vital forests, reduce erosion, create habitat, and build resilience along the Chesapeake Bay.

Check out this great article highlighting the project and the impact shoreline restoration can have for both people and wildlife:
