Troop 249 is a scout-led troop where boys ages 11–17 grow into leaders through adventure, service, and outdoor fun.

Based in Edgewater, we meet every Monday at 7:00 PM at American Legion Post 226.

🪢🎃 GETTING KNOTTED UP FOR SPOOK-O-REE! 👻⚜️

What’s a Scout leader to do on a rainy Sunday? 🌧️

Apparently, cut rope. Lots and lots of rope. 😂

We’re getting ready for our upcoming River Hawk District BSA Spook-o-ree, where Troop 249 will be hosting a knot-tying station!

Webelos and Arrow of Light (AOL) Cub Scouts will have the opportunity to visit different stations, learn new Scouting skills, and get a little taste of the adventures waiting for them in a Scout troop. 🏕️

Our Scouts will be sharing their knot-tying knowledge, and we’re making sure there’s plenty of rope ready for everyone to give it a try!

Because in Scouting, sometimes the best way to learn the ropes is to actually learn the ropes! 😉🪢

We can’t wait to meet our future Scouts at Spook-o-ree! 🎃⚜️

🕷️⚜️ FREAKY FRIDAY ⚜️🕷️

You zipped the tent.

You checked your sleeping bag.

But did you check… YOUR SHOES?! 👀🕷️

When Scouts spend time outdoors, we share the woods with plenty of creepy-crawly neighbors.

And while finding a spider near your campsite might make you move very quickly 😂, spiders are an important part of the ecosystem. They help control insect populations — including some of the bugs we’d much rather NOT have hanging around camp.

Scouting teaches us to respect wildlife — even the kind with eight legs. 🕸️

🎃 FREAKY QUESTION: You find a giant spider in your tent. Are you:

A) Calmly relocating it
B) Getting another Scout to handle it
C) Giving the spider the tent and sleeping somewhere else 😂

🦅 WHAT’S UP WEDNESDAY: How Rare Is Eagle?

Eagle Scout is the highest rank in Scouting — but earning it takes much more than checking off a list of requirements.

Scouts work their way through seven ranks, demonstrate leadership, complete required merit badges, serve their communities, and plan and lead a major service project before earning Eagle. 🦅

And the coolest part? The skills and leadership are built little by little over years.

🇺🇸⚜️ Tonight, our Scouts got to do the recognizing.

Troop 249 was proud to recognize two of our adult leaders for their military service.

These leaders served our country—and today they continue that spirit of service by giving their time, experience, and leadership to the next generation.

Thank you for your service to our country, and thank you for everything you do for our Scouts. 🇺🇸

🦊⚜️ FREAKY FRIDAY ⚜️🦝

Ever wonder what all those sounds are when you’re camping at night? 🌙🌲

Rustling leaves… a bark in the distance… maybe even a strange little screech.

It turns out, the woods can get pretty chatty after dark!

One sound that might surprise you comes from a fox. 🦊 Foxes communicate using a variety of sounds, including barks, calls and even high-pitched cries that you might not expect from such a small animal.

That’s part of the fun of camping — getting away from the everyday noise and discovering a whole different world that comes alive outdoors. 🌲✨

And the more time Scouts spend outside, the more they learn to recognize the sights and sounds of the wildlife around them.

⚜️ WHAT’S UP WEDNESDAY: Why Three Fingers?

Ever wonder why Scouts use three fingers when giving the Scout sign? ✋⚜️

Those three fingers represent the three parts of the Scout Oath — duty to God and country, duty to others, and duty to self.

It’s a small symbol with a whole lot of meaning behind it!

💙⚜️ HAPPY NATIONAL SONS DAY ⚜️💙

Today we’re celebrating the sons who keep life interesting. 💙

The boys who come home muddy.
Who somehow manage to lose things that were just in their hands. 😂
Who are growing faster than we’re ready for.

And who, little by little, are becoming young men.

One of the special things about Scouting is getting a front-row seat to that growth.

We watch boys learn to lead.
We watch them struggle—and try again.
We watch them help someone younger.
We watch confidence grow as “I don’t know how” slowly becomes “I can do it.”

They’re still our sons.

But they’re also becoming leaders, friends, helpers and young men we’re proud to know. ⚜️

So today, here’s to all of our sons—and to giving them plenty of adventures along the way. 💙

🚨 SCOUT MYTHBUSTER 🚨

MYTH: “You have to know a lot about Scouting before you join.”

✅ FACT: Nope! That’s what Scouting is for.

You don’t need to know how to pitch a tent, tie a bunch of knots, cook over a fire, read a map, or earn a merit badge before walking through the door.

You just have to be willing to try.

At Troop 249, Scouts learn from other Scouts, build skills along the way, make mistakes, try again, and eventually find themselves teaching the next new Scout.

🌲 No experience required.
🥾 No “outdoors expert” required.
⚜️ Just show up ready for an adventure.

⚜️ THROWBACK POST ⚜️

Throwing it back to summer camp a few years ago and a lesson that goes way beyond the pool! 💦

Our Scouts practiced water safety and rescue skills, including how to throw a rescue ring to someone who needs help in the water. 🛟

It may look like just another day at the pool, but these are the kinds of skills Scouts learn so they’re prepared to help when it really matters.

Learn it. Practice it. Be prepared. ⚜️

🥾 MYTH: You need to already know how to camp, hike, tie knots, start a fire, and survive in the wilderness before joining Scouts.

✅ FACT: That’s what Scouting is for!

You don’t join because you already know how to do everything. You join to learn.

Some Scouts arrive loving the outdoors. Others have barely slept in a tent. Some are ready to jump into every new adventure—and some need a little encouragement first.

There’s room for all of them. 💚

No experience required. Just bring a willingness to try.
