Great news! Cooperative Extension’s (CCE) experts in their mariculture program planted another 20,000 oysters that were growing at the floating dock at Shore Road Marina. They were planted in an area near the marina where an oyster reef is being created to help filter and clean the water in the Harbor.
Thank you to our volunteers who went there weekly, sometimes twice a week this summer to clean out the growing cages. Special thanks to CCE and the Town of Brookhaven and Councilmember Kornreich for their cooperation and assistance. Also a special shout out to Seth and Mallory at Shore Road Marina for allowing our floating dock and access to it this summer. Kudos to SC Legislator Englebright for funding this project when he was in the Assembly! We hope to continue and expand this project next year with a grant from Assemblywoman Kassay! I’d say pass the cocktail sauce but these oysters are only for working to clean the Harbor, not to be eaten because they are planted in an area that is uncertified for shellfish consumption. One day that might change…

We will be there! Come see our table with Oysters we are growing in Setauket Harbor and learn about our efforts to clean up the Harbor.
