49 bills. Nine policy areas. One mission: creating meaningful systems change.

During its first full legislative cycle, the Sims-Fayola Policy & Advocacy Institute (SFPAI) tracked policies impacting Colorado’s youth, strengthened relationships, and identified opportunities to help build stronger systems.

Of the 49 bills monitored, 16 were identified as high priority, and three bills received our formal support. All three became law:

📜 SB26-080: Cradle to Career Grant Program — Connecting children and youth with educational opportunities, extracurricular programs, and family support services.

📜 HB26-1141: Discriminatory Practices in Public Schools — Strengthening protections against discrimination and supporting student belonging and positive school environments.

📜 HB26-1004: Child Care Contribution Tax Credit — Extending tax incentives that support investment in child care and early childhood infrastructure.

But the work doesn’t end when the legislative session closes.

We’re using what we learned to explore new opportunities, strengthen educational pathways, and inform potential policy priorities as we look toward 2027.

Because meaningful change requires more than legislation. It requires continued action, collaboration, and implementation.

When does responsibility become too much for a child?

For many Black and Brown boys, what may look like maturity or leadership can actually be the result of having to grow up too soon.

In this clip from Episode 2 of All Things Boys, Dr. Dedrick Sims discusses parentification, sharing his personal experience of helping raise his siblings and exploring how boys are often expected to take on adult responsibilities before they’re emotionally prepared.

It’s an important reminder that just because a child can carry responsibility doesn’t mean they should have to.
