“What social equity has been defined as and morphed into in cannabis is quite limiting,” Williams said. “Just because we’re talking about a segment of the community that has been incredibly adversely impacted by the War on Drugs does not mean they all want to own a cannabis business. What if they want to be in an ancillary business? Who’s talking about what kind of businesses those can be, or what it takes to run a business?

Looking to help another round of entrepreneurs, Grand Rapids-based cannabis company Fluresh opened the third year of its business incubator, the Cannabis Entrepreneur Program.

Adult-use sales haven’t begun yet in New York but state officials aim for the first adult-use retail shops to open by the end of the year. And the first batch of retail licenses are supposed to go to social equity candidates under what Gov. Kathy Hochul is hailing as a “first of its kind approach” that will serve as a national model........
Seven months after commercial sales began in New Mexico there’s still no social equity program to speak of under the Cannabis Control Division, the state’s regulatory and licensing agency. While New Mexico has issued more than 1,000 cannabis parent licenses, there’s nothing to indicate that any of them earned a license as a social equity beneficiary.

New York and New Mexico are as different as strip steak and carne asada in many ways, their regulatory frameworks for the cannabis industry

The law also includes several social equity components for those negatively impacted by past ma*****na possession, including:

Oakland will hold its first-ever cannabis equity week from November 14-18, 2022, according to a city press release. Oakland was the first city in the U.S. in 2017 to start a cannabis social equity program to help those most affected by the War on Drugs find a foothold in the regulated cannabis industry. The celebration will highlight equity operators who they say “have suffered from a lack of consumer awareness and marketing,” which has led to fewer dispensaries carrying equity products on their shelves and on their online menus. During the event, select dispensaries will be offering special deals for equity brands.
