What if no one “owned” your mentoring ministry?

At Okolona Christian Church, mentoring doesn’t belong to one pastor, staff member, or ministry leader. And that’s exactly why it has become so deeply rooted.

Since launching Radical Mentoring in 2021, they’ve seen men and women experience life change and then turn around and invest in others.

Mark Ledford, Director of Next Steps Ministries, shares how that kind of ownership has helped mentoring become part of their church’s DNA and a way of life they hope will pass from generation to generation.

At our July Church Partner Call, we had the opportunity to hear from Okolona Christian Church about the journey that has shaped their mentoring ministry over the past five to six years.

What stood out most wasn't the number of groups or men who have completed the process. It was the intentional decisions they made along the way: building mentoring into the culture of their church, developing mentors from within, and choosing quality over rapid growth.

Today, roughly 80 men have completed Radical Mentoring across approximately 18 groups, and the impact is evident in the leaders they're raising up and the culture they've built.

Big vision starts with time spent together.

Recently, the Radical Mentoring Board and their spouses gathered at Bison View Lodge in Helen, Georgia, for a weekend of reflection, planning, and looking ahead.

Centered around the theme "Radical Mentoring's Second Mountain," we celebrated God's faithfulness over the past 25 years while casting vision for the next 25.

Together, we reaffirmed our commitment to serving the Church well, because while mentoring is the mechanism, whole-life formation is the goal.

And it wasn't all meetings. There was plenty of fun along the way too, from some friendly pickleball competition 🏓 to a murder mystery dinner that kept everyone guessing. 🔎

We're thankful for the leaders who continue to steward this ministry with wisdom, humility, and a shared vision for what's ahead.

A couple months ago, we had the privilege of visiting our church partner, The Rock of KC in Kansas City as they celebrated 85 men who have completed the Radical Mentoring journey. 🎉

From sharing BBQ and hearing powerful stories to spending time with mentors over breakfast, it was encouraging to see how mentoring has become part of the DNA of their church.

One of the biggest reasons for their success has been the commitment of their lead mentors, church staff, and senior pastor. When church leadership is united around mentoring, lives are changed and a culture of discipleship takes root.

We also had the opportunity to encourage their mentors and share best practices as they prepare to launch Radical Mentoring for Women. As they begin Season 5 of Radical Mentoring, we're excited to see how God continues to work through this church.
