NIC Share Your Nurse Story is honored for the return of Evelyn Y.N. Yengiyoe with updates on her courageous Nurse-Midwifery journey.

Evelyn’s childhood experience of witnessing her mother experience severe postpartum bleeding—at a time when healthcare was approximately 14 miles away, and the event was attributed locally to witchcraft—provides an especially meaningful opening. Years later, her nursing education helped her understand the clinical explanation for what she had witnessed and transformed that experience into a professional calling toward maternal health.

Her return to school as a Student Nurse Midwife at the Lutheran University of Liberia, Phebe Esther Bacon College of Health Sciences in Suakoko, B**g County, represents not simply another academic achievement, but the continuation of a dream rooted in improving care for women and families.
Her leadership as Chairlady of Nurses In Charge–Liberia adds another dimension: she is simultaneously developing herself professionally while helping build a community that encourages other nurses and midwives to grow.

A particularly powerful part of this conversation allows Evelyn to contrast what her family understood about postpartum hemorrhage in 1997 with what she understands today as a nurse and future midwife. That creates a natural discussion about health literacy, access to skilled maternal care, cultural beliefs, and why educating nurses and midwives remains so important in underserved communities.

💜 The Story of Ombaka: Where Every Child Has Worth 🎗️

In Kisumu County, Kenya, there is a special place where children whose journeys may look different are still being given opportunities to learn, grow, belong, and dream.

Ombaka Special School serves learners with physical, intellectual, and developmental challenges. Public information describes it as a boarding school serving children with special needs, while Kenya’s Ministry of Education identifies Ombaka as a Special Pre-Vocational School.

The community surrounding Ombaka has also endured significant hardship. The area is vulnerable to flooding, and nearby Ombaka Primary School has served as an evacuation site for families displaced when rivers overflow and Lake Victoria backflow affects surrounding communities. Yet amid these challenges, organizations and community partners have continued investing in the children—providing food, clean-water and hygiene resources, solar power, and other essential support.

In 2024, another act of compassion reached Ombaka when a collaborative medical outreach involving the Kenya Medical Research Institute and local partners provided health services and distributed mosquito nets to several schools, including Ombaka Special School. It was a simple intervention with a powerful message: these children matter, their health matters, and their future matters.

And now, NICTOUR Kenya 2026 has been invited to become another chapter in that story.

We are not traveling to Kenya believing that we are bringing all the answers. We are going to listen, learn, serve, partner, encourage, and love. We will stand alongside the educators, caregivers, healthcare professionals, families, and community members who have already been faithfully serving these children.

For NICTOUR, Ombaka represents the heart of our calling:

To see the child before the disability.
To recognize ability before limitation.
To bring compassion alongside healthcare.
To serve without diminishing dignity.
And to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ through our actions.

When we arrive in December, may every child know:

You are seen. You are valued. You are loved. And your life has purpose.

Perhaps this is one of the places for which God asked, “Whom shall I send?”

And by His grace, NICTOUR is answering:
