NTRODUCING THE DDD INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM.

A NEW SPACE FOR ARTISTS, WRITERS, CURATORS, AND THINKERS TO STUDY, EXCHANGE, AND CREATE IN DETROIT.

WE BELIEVE DETROIT DESERVES A SPACE FOR SERIOUS CREATIVE AND INTELLECTUAL EXCHANGE.

Detroit has never lacked artists, writers, curators, educators, and thinkers doing important work. What has been missing is a sustained space where those disciplines can come together, challenge one another, and develop ideas beyond the structure of a conventional academic program.
That’s why we created the DDD Independent Study Program.

Inspired by the renowned Whitney Independent Study Program, the DDD ISP is a new interdisciplinary program designed to bring artists, writers, and curators together for sustained study, conversation, experimentation, and independent practice.

Each year, approximately thirty participants will take part in two thirteen-week sessions, with seminars, studio and post-studio practice, independent work, and one-on-one mentorship woven throughout the program.

But the experience extends beyond the classroom.

Through relationships with Detroit’s leading cultural institutions, organizations, and creative spaces, participants will engage directly with the city and the people shaping its cultural landscape.

We’re creating a place to read, question, experiment, collaborate, and develop new ways of thinking, deeply rooted in Detroit.

The DDD Independent Study Program will welcome its first class in Fall 2027.

YOU’RE INVITED

The Young Creatives Exhibition brings together work by Detroit artists alongside a special presentation of student work created through a hands-on experience led by those same artists as teaching artists.
After experiencing works from the Detroit Institute of Arts through the DIA InsidelOut installations at Detroit Design District, young people were invited to learn directly from Detroit artists, respond to what they saw, reinterpret it through their own perspective, and create original work of their own.
Presented side by side, the exhibition celebrates the connection between Detroit’s creative community and the next generation of artists - and the magic that can happen when young people are given the opportunity, tools, and encouragement to see themselves as creators.
At the heart of it is a simple belief: all young people are artists.

She Builds at the Detroit Design District.

Last week, we welcomed Girl Brain Studios and an incredible community of visionaries, creators, entrepreneurs, and builders to the Detroit Design District for an evening centered around connection, creativity, and bold ideas.

The room came alive with meaningful conversations, new connections, inspiration, and a shared passion for building something bigger together. From showcasing businesses and creative projects to connecting with a community rooted in purpose, She Builds created space for Detroit’s creatives and entrepreneurs to come together and elevate one another.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the evening so special. We loved seeing the Detroit Design District filled with so much creativity, ambition, and connection.

Next up: KIN

Hosted by Caleb Moss, KIN invites visitors into an immersive living archive exploring Black identity through lineage, ritual, memory, and the everyday moments that carry culture across generations.

Through large-scale portraits, multi-channel video, layered soundscapes, oral histories, and intimate photographs, KIN brings together stories of family, migration, tradition, and community in a space designed to be experienced rather than simply observed.

But this archive doesn’t end when you leave. Visitors will be invited to contribute a memory, family ritual, or message to future generations, becoming part of an evolving collection shaped by the community itself.

Join us for an evening of reflection, connection, and storytelling as we explore the moments and traditions that shape who we are and what we carry forward.
