Denver Kids is excited to celebrate our rising high schoolers! 🎒

Our middle school Advisors have spent the last few weeks attending continuations and celebrating the accomplishments of all of our Denver Kids 8th graders.

Denver Kids Advisor, Rachel, shared a story of her student, Israel. Throughout middle school, one of Israel's focuses was increasing his attendance rate. She says, “Israel joined Denver Kids in 6th grade, and the growth he has had from 6th grade to 8th grade is tremendous! With the support of the school social worker, front office staff, external therapists, his mom, and Denver Kids, Israel finished his 8th grade school year with a 95% attendance rate! Israel also won the Jaime Escalante Award, the highest honor awarded to only 1 eighth grader every year, for his outstanding character, academic excellence, and resilience. Let’s go, Israel!” 🏆️

Congratulations to Israel and to all of our rising high school students, we’re so excited to see all that you are able to accomplish next!

Glow into your Future with Denver Kids! 💜 ⚡️

Last week, Denver Kids High School and Youth Pathways Postsecondary Program (YP3) Graduates gathered to celebrate a successful year of hard work and dedication towards pursuing the futures of their dreams.

Students were able to participate in activities including t-shirt and glow lantern making, games, and writing a letter to their future selves. In addition, students entering the YP3 program were able to ask questions and learn more about their next journey with Denver Kids from a panel of graduating YP3 students.

The night concluded with food and a dance party! Thanks to all of our Alumni and volunteers who played a part in making the event a success and helping our graduates kick off their next chapter!

Denver Kids is thrilled to congratulate the graduating class of 2026! 🎓️

Over the past few weeks, we’ve had the privilege of watching our students walk across the stage and accept their diploma. Our graduates are hard working, resilient, and inspiring young people. We can’t wait to see them continue growing as they take the next step towards pursuing their dreams!

Denver Kids Advisor, Jayme, shared, “I got to see some of the students I’ve worked with from the very beginning of their high school journey walk across the stage. It was both an honor and a pleasure to be part of the village of these students' lives. I am truly going to miss them! It’s crazy to think that I’ve known them as long as I have, and now they’re off to a new journey, one that I wish them all the best in.”

Join Denver Kids in congratulating the class of 2026!

History Break! 🧠

This month, we’re highlighting Denver Kids in the 1980s.

During this time, Denver families were navigating an economic recession, leading to higher rates of unemployment and a slow economy. Poverty and instability brought a rise in the illegal drug market, making students even more vulnerable to drug exposure and criminal involvement. Denver schools also began to see a rise in teen pregnancy rates, as access to affordable and safe birth control methods was inequitable upon racial lines. These instabilities furthered the need for social services, such as Denver Kids, to step in.

Denver Girls, a separate organization from Denver Boys at the time, expanded its focus, acquiring private funding to serve more than 300 girls. The program was incredibly successful and changed the narrative of what young women could aspire to be, including doctors, engineers, and scientists.

Denver Girls also continued to serve its students through experiences and mentorship that had been mostly reserved for boys. While many schools were struggling with implementing Title IX compliance, giving girls equal access to sports, clubs, and extracurriculars, Denver Girls was ahead of the curve, already providing these kinds of experiences since the early 1970s.

Meanwhile, Denver Boys continued providing job opportunities, mentorship experiences, academic support, and recreational activities for students. With the support of both organizations, students had more time to just be kids. VHS tapes of Ghostbusters and Back to the Future were on repeat, Walkmans sang the tunes of Whitney Houston and the Beastie Boys, and a few too many rounds of Pac-Man were enjoyed.

Be on the lookout each month as we highlight success stories of each decade!

Congratulations to the Denver Kids graduating seniors who were nominated for the Donna Hultin Excellence Award.

Donna Hultin dedicated 28 years to Denver Kids as a Counselor, Executive Director, and Board Member. She was known for her ability to connect people to this work. Donna was a graduate of George Washington High School and the University of Colorado at Boulder.

The Donna Hultin Excellence Award, through the Rotary Club of Denver, continues her legacy. It’s not just financial support—it’s a signal to students that this community believes in them, stands behind them, and is invested in their future.

Huge congratulations to Denver Kids student, Gladys, who won the Donna Hultin Excellence Award and cash gift to support her on her college journey. Additionally, Denver Kids students, Cindy and Takiyah, received runner-up awards.

The event also included a speech from Arbay Mohamed, 2021 Graduate from North High School and Denver Kids Alum. Arbay spoke to the value of Volunteer Mentors, her Advisors, and the life long relationships she has built. Arbay is finishing her education degree and student teaching!

Thank you to Wally and Rachel Hultin and the committee of Rotarians who reviewed the applications, selected the award winner, and helped make this event possible for our students.
