AIME is one of the first U.S. engineering societies, established in 1871. It is a part of the UEF with its sister entities, ASCE, ASME, IEEE, and AICHE.

AIME has 4 Member Societies, AIST, SME, SPE, and TMS, and its mission is to support them.
