Unlike the embryos of other vertebrates, early snake embryos coil as they get longer, typically forming clockwise spirals.

A new study offers an explanation for why embryonic snakes go through these contortions—and why they tend to curve in one direction.

In the popular imagination, the defining image of the Paleolithic era—a time period stretching from the appearance of the first humans to the end of the last ice age, during which early humans and our ancestors fashioned stone tools for a variety of purposes—might be male hunters chasing mammoths and woolly rhinos across frozen steppes of Eurasia. But prehistoric art paints a different picture: The vast majority depicts women, suggesting the prehistoric past operated under very different rules from Western societies today.

Austrian comic book artist Ulli Lust spent years reading everything she could find about ice age archaeology before starting her book, Early Man was a Woman (Die Frau als Mensch). An exploration of women’s underappreciated role in prehistory, the first volume was published in German in 2025. It won the prize for best German-language nonfiction book earlier this year, the first time a comic has ever won the award.

The first of three volumes have now come out in English translation. Science spoke with Lust about the challenges of accurately capturing the archaeological record in a comic book and why the Stone Age is synonymous with cave men and not cave women.

Nature’s coronagraph. 🌙☀️

During the 2024 total solar eclipse, the Moon blocked the Sun’s bright surface, revealing its outer atmosphere, or corona, in stunning detail.

Those bright pink features? Solar prominences, jets of plasma extending from the Sun’s surface. And the tiny white slivers of light around the Moon? Those are Baily’s Beads, sunlight peeking through valleys along the lunar surface.

But this wasn’t just a spectacular sight. Scientists and citizen scientists collected observations along the path of totality to study the innermost part of the Sun’s corona, a region that’s only visible during a total solar eclipse.

Their observations can help scientists better understand how heat and energy move from the Sun into the solar system, knowledge that can help us understand how solar activity affects technology and humans on Earth.

With the historic 2025 Turner Prize awarded to Nnena Kalu, SciArt Association observes a masterful convergence of somatic repetition and material structuralism. Kalu’s iterative binding of diverse media functions as an empirical inquiry into spatial volume and neurodivergent creative mechanics, foregrounding process as both method and meaning.
