Our goal has always been to close the rural access gap, but along the way, we hit a scaling bottleneck that no existing tool could solve.

What followed was six years of building, testing, funding, and learning. Case at DUKE spent months documenting the decisions behind that journey, from build vs. buy to governance to what mission-aligned technical talent actually looks like in practice.

If you’re interested in learning more about the intersection of AI and social impact, this is worth a read.

Rural communities have long been invisible in global datasets. And you can’t build infrastructure for communities that don’t exist on a map.

That’s the data equity problem at the heart of our AI work and the reason we built Fika Digital from the ground up rather than relying on tools that were never designed with rural populations in mind.

Case at Duke documented our journey in their Managing AI for Impact series.

Fika Collect is now live across all provinces in Rwanda! 🇷🇼
The platform rollout sparked a nationwide conversation about how better data can drive better infrastructure decisions for rural communities.

Our team worked alongside district engineers, planners, and partners at Rwanda Ministry of Infrastructure, Ministry of Local Government, Rwanda, LODA, RTDA, Rwanda Polytechnic, and RMF to lay the foundation for how Rwanda will identify, prioritize, and maintain trail bridge infrastructure going forward. Grateful to every partner and team member who made this possible.

Safe movement isn’t just a development outcome, and access isn’t a reward for geographic luck. It’s a basic condition of being human.
The right to move freely, without risking one’s life, is a principle that should be extended to every person, everywhere.

Ask a father what he wants for his family, and he’ll rarely say wealth or recognition. He’ll say: safety, security, a way back home.

Safe arrivals are what love looks like on the ground. Getting there shouldn’t be left to luck.

Happy Father’s Day to the ones that feel like 💙

Last Friday, we brought together the Fika Collect technical working group, key government partners, and selected councils to review the pilot progress and chart the next phase of rollout.

Since launching in Lusaka and Southern Provinces in March 2026, Fika Collect has already received ~100 bridge requests across 9 provinces. That kind of organic adoption tells us something important: when the right tool exists, people will use it.

But the bigger story is about ownership. Fika Collect was never meant to be a Fika tool. It's designed to be a government planning system, and that vision is becoming a reality. With the Ministry of Local Government now co-financing 50% of bridge costs, the platform is being embedded into how Zambia plans, tracks, and manages rural bridge infrastructure at a national level.

Next up: rolling out to Luapula and Northern Provinces in July, integrating with national asset management systems, and continuing to strengthen the partner portal based on on-the-ground feedback.
We look forward to seeing the impact and lasting systems grow through this next phase of Fika Collect.
