Since 1992, has been a home away from home for families, a loving community where kids have the freedom to be kids and adults are supported as they define their own parenting styles.

The Sunflower Model is a developmentally based philosophy of social, emotional and intellectual learning that involves parents and caregivers as facilitators in their child’s educational experience. The pillars of the model are:

☝️Respect for the Individual
💪Learning Through Experience
🤝Learning Within Community

We teach these concepts through hands-on experiences in Play, Nature, and the Arts.

Our goal is to develop children and adults who are reflective thinkers, respectful communicators, confident innovators, creative problem-solvers, empathetic peacemakers, passionate players and lifelong learners.

The concept of Bridging came about in the early days of Sunflower Creative Arts. Our founder, Susan Caruso, wished to create a unique tradition for graduates of the preschool, a rite of passage to symbolize the ending of one phase of life and the beginning of the next. She felt it should be celebratory & full of meaning for not only the families in attendance, but for children & their teachers as well.

On Bridging Day, everyone gathers in the Seedlings Nature Playscape. The graduating children form a line at one side of the Swiss Bridge with their teachers, while their families line up on the other and form an arched tunnel of sunflowers, with their outstretched arms.

Each child shares a special moment with a teacher they have chosen before they cross over, “over the bridge and on to new adventures.”

This first full school year without Susan has been felt by all of us. On this Bridging day without her, we carry both the ache of missing her and the gift of continuing a tradition she made so meaningful.

A mixed-age group changes the way play unfolds.

The younger children are often surrounded by examples of what is possible. The older children have chances to try on being a leader. The play itself becomes more layered because children bring different experiences to the same space.

At Summer Seedlings Camp, this might happen around a sandpit project, a pretend game, a garden job, or a collaborative invention that keeps growing as more children join in.

These moments carry one of Sunflower’s core pillars, Learning Within Community, as children learn how to play, listen, problem-solve, and belong together.

Summer Seedlings Camp is open to children ages 3-6 in Delray Beach. 🌻

Messy play gives children concrete information to work with.

Before a child can describe sticky, heavy, slippery, full, empty, sinking, spreading, or changing, they need time to feel those ideas in their hands.

A bin of mud, foam, water, or paint offers real practice with cause and effect, hand strength, coordination, decision-making, and language rooted in experience.

There is value in the spill, the smear, the squeeze, and the do-over.

At Sunflower, children are trusted with materials they can explore, change, and return to because this is how young children make sense of their world through Play, Nature, and the Arts. 🌻

This is what summer camp can look like.
At Sunflower Creative Arts, children spend their days immersed in play, nature, art, movement, and connection. The environment invites curiosity, creativity, collaboration, and plenty of joy.
Summer Seedlings Camp runs in weekly sessions throughout June and July for children ages 3-6. ☀️

Why should we care about tree climbing? Isn't it, after all, a risky activity that will end up with a visit to the ER or worse? Actually, the statistics tell a different story.

In 2016, researchers from the University of Phoenix surveyed 1,600 parents who let their children climb trees. Of the participants that responded to the survey questions, 94.84% reported that their child scraped a knee, elbow, or skin as a result of climbing a tree, and less than 2% reported a broken bone.

The iconic childhood pursuit of climbing a tree is one of the simplest forms of pleasure for many kids, along with many benefits.

What makes Summer Seedlings Camp different from many traditional summer camps is the amount of uninterrupted time children have to play.

Instead of constantly rotating between highly structured activities, children are given long stretches of time to build, create, invent, collaborate, move their bodies, solve problems, and become deeply engaged in their ideas.

A cardboard structure can become an hours-long engineering project. A game in the sandpit can turn into storytelling, teamwork, conflict resolution, and imaginative play all at once.

Summer Seedlings Camp takes place in Delray Beach for children ages 3-6 throughout June and July. ☀️

🌻What is one memory you want your child to keep from their Sunflower experience ?🌻

“Wow, this is an incredibly hard thing for me. There are so many invaluable life lessons and memories that I hope they will carry with them, always. Love of nature, self-led exploration, play, ingenuity, and risk-taking for sure. But for me, conflict resolution and approach to “problems” is deeply valuable throughout our entire lives. I am still learning!”
