James Millikin Homestead The James Millikin Homestead is a Gilded Age mansion built in 1876 in the High Victorian Italianate style with prominent Second Empire influences.

The historic home of Mr. & Mrs. James Millikin, open for tours & special events and available for rentals. The James Millikin Homestead, located in Decatur, Illinois, is the former residence of James and Anna Millikin, founders of Millikin University, Millikin Bank, and Millikin Estate Trust, and was built in 1875-6. In June 1974, the Millikin Homestead was added to the National Register of Historic places. It is now maintained and enjoyed by the community.

Eight people came to our first Work Day today. We had a good start but there is so much more to do. If you love the Homestead, support historic preservation, or just simply love walking across the property, would you consider coming to Day #2? It will be Sunday, September 6th from 2-4 PM. If it rains, we will try again on Saturday, September 12th from 10AM to Noon! Just bring gloves and any yard tools you have!

This is a photo of the main hallway of the Homestead, circa 1970. After the completion of the Kirkland Fine Arts Center, the Decatur Art Institute (the James Millikin Homestead) was no longer needed as an art center. The Junior Welfare Association began the work of restoring the interior of the home to what it would have looked like before 1920. This photograph shows the blank, white walls that were added above the fireplaces to make room for more art. Once JWA took over, they began to remove those walls, thus unveiling the beauty we now see today.

This is the Washington Female Seminary where Anna Aston went to school and graduated from in 1854. Anna would later marry James Millikin on her family farm in Decatur, on January 1, 1857. Anna's school was just a block away from where James had studied years prior.
