Georgia is ranked 39th in the nation in child and family well-being in the 2026 KIDS COUNT Data Book, released today by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Georgia has not been among the bottom 10 states since 2017—but recent progress has stalled. The state’s challenges are most evident in health outcomes, where Georgia fell six places to 45th, even as economic well-being improved two spots to 34th. https://bit.ly/4av3RPx

💛 Behavior is Communication — Part 3 💛
What if our child’s behavior isn’t willful disobedience… but a stress response?

Sometimes children shift into survival mode through responses like:
⚡ Fight
🏃 Flight
🧊 Freeze
🤝 Fawn

When stress levels rise, the thinking part of the brain becomes less accessible. That means children may suddenly struggle with skills they know how to do — listening, following directions, emotional regulation, transitions, problem-solving, or communicating calmly.

Have you ever noticed your child master a skill one day, then completely fall apart over it a few days later? That doesn’t always mean they are being manipulative or choosing disobedience. It may simply mean their stress capacity is lower in that moment.

Honestly… adults experience this too. Ever been “hangry” and suddenly far less patient than normal? 😅

Stress capacity changes throughout the day based on sleep, hunger, sensory overload, transitions, emotions, environment, connection, and life experiences. When a child’s stress load is high, they may not need more demands — they may need more support.

💡 Sometimes the most helpful question is not:
“Why won’t my child comply?”

But instead:
“What support does my child need right now to feel safe, regulated, and successful?” ❤️

In moments of overwhelm, consider:
✔️ Lowering the demand
✔️ Offering connection first
✔️ Co-regulating before correcting
✔️ Providing calm support and structure

A regulated child can access the skills we know they have.

💛 Behavior is Communication — Part 2 💛
Sometimes “bad behavior” is actually an unmet need asking for attention.

Before we assume a child is being disrespectful, defiant, lazy, or difficult, it can help to pause and ask:

🔹 Are they tired?
🔹 Hungry or thirsty?
🔹 Overstimulated?
🔹 Feeling disconnected or overwhelmed?
🔹 Struggling emotionally or physically?

Children are still learning how to regulate their emotions and communicate their needs. When their bodies or brains are overwhelmed, behavior is often the first signal we notice.

Using a whole child approach reminds us that behavior does not happen in isolation. Sleep, nutrition, sensory needs, relationships, emotional safety, stress, environment, and connection all impact how children respond to the world around them.

Instead of immediately focusing on correction, we can first focus on connection and regulation. A regulated child is far more capable of listening, learning, and problem-solving than a child operating in survival mode. ❤️

Sometimes the most effective response is not punishment — it’s helping meet the need beneath the behavior.

📌 Before reacting, pause and get curious:
“What might my child be communicating right now?”
