This weekend, The Black Feather Foundation brought military Veterans together for something simple: time together.
We ate together. Sat around and talked. Spent time outdoors. Explored hundreds of acres. And on Saturday, we fired up the forges.
With Tom and his blacksmithing crew guiding them, each Veteran forged his own custom knife by hand.
What struck us most was where it started.
A discarded piece of steel. An old truck spring that had already served its purpose.
Into the fire it went.
Heat it. Hammer it. Shape it. Back into the fire. Keep working it.
And eventually, something that looked like scrap became something strong, useful, and beautiful.
There’s something in that.
Life can put you through some serious fire. It can beat the hell out of you. It can change your shape completely.
That doesn’t mean your story is over.
Sometimes the fire is where something new gets forged.
This weekend wasn’t about sitting Veterans in a circle and telling them how they should feel.
It was about putting good men together, giving them something meaningful to do with their hands, getting them outside, feeding them well, and letting connection happen naturally.
We need more of that.
