Gateway Lodge No. 40, AF & AM, is a Masonic lodge in Creve Coeur, Missouri, dedicated to Brotherly Love, Relief and Truth.

The third degree, Master Mason, is the completion of the journey that began as an Entered Apprentice. It teaches fidelity: keeping your word when it costs something, standing by your brothers, and finishing what you start. It also asks a Mason to think seriously about his own life, his legacy, and what he will leave behind. A Master Mason has the full rights of lodge membership, including voting and holding office, but more importantly, he carries the full responsibility of the Craft: to live its values, not just to know them.

Tonight: Disney Trivia Night at Rose Hill.

Doors open at 6 PM and trivia starts at 7. Rose Hill Masonic Center, 11122 Olive Blvd., Creve Coeur.

Admission is $20 a person, eight to a table. Bring four nonperishable food items and take $5 off. There are costume and table decoration contests too, so dress up and decorate for Halloween if you want to.

You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks. Some refreshments will be provided.

The second degree, Fellow Craft, turns a Mason's attention outward, toward learning. Where the first degree is about foundation, the second is about education: the liberal arts and sciences, the value of knowledge, and the idea that a man should keep growing his mind all his life. A Fellow Craft learns that character without learning is incomplete, and learning without character is empty. The two have to travel together. It is the degree of the curious mind, and it reminds us that becoming a better man is a lifelong course of study, not a single lesson.

The first step in Freemasonry is the Entered Apprentice degree. It is where every Mason begins: learning to listen, to work on himself, and to build a foundation of character before anything else. The working tools of this degree remind us that a good life, like a good building, starts with honest material and careful work. An Entered Apprentice is not expected to know everything. He is expected to show up, pay attention, and start shaping himself into a better man, one day at a time. That is the whole point of the first degree, and it stays with a Mason for the rest of his life.

A question we hear often: what do Freemasons actually do?

We take good men and give them ancient tools, not of stone, but of character. The square teaches us to square our actions. The level reminds us we meet as equals. The plumb admonishes us to walk upright.

We support our communities quietly. We care for our widows and orphans. We gather, we learn, we laugh, and we hold one another to a higher standard.

We don't promise perfection. We promise brothers who will help you become the man you meant to be.

That is the Craft. That is Gateway Lodge No. 40.

In Freemasonry, there is an old saying: 2B1ASK1. To be one, ask one.

No Mason will ever invite you to join. The decision must be yours, made freely and of your own accord, because the journey means more when you choose it.

So this is not an invitation. It is simply a door, left open.

If you are a man of good character who believes he can be better, as a man, a husband, a father, a friend, and you want brothers who will walk beside you while you try, come have dinner with us on a stated Tuesday. Ask your questions. Take your time.

The door is open. The knocking is up to you.

Freemasonry has always been a family affair.

Gateway Lodge proudly supports the Masonic youth orders, George L. Walters Chapter of DeMolay for young men and Bethel No. 4 of Job's Daughters for young women, as well as Florissant Chapter No. 161 of the Order of the Eastern Star.

The values we practice in lodge, integrity, charity, and brotherly love, don't stop at the lodge room door. They are meant to be carried home, taught to our children, and lived in our communities.

A man is never just joining a lodge. He is bringing his family into something larger than himself.

Every Mason learns three great tenets: Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Brotherly Love: to regard the whole human race as one family.
Relief: to relieve the distressed, a duty that has made Masonic charity one of the great quiet forces for good in Missouri and beyond.
Truth: to be honest in all our dealings, and to seek it diligently.

They sound simple. Living them is the work of a lifetime, and that is precisely the point. Freemasonry doesn't claim to make men perfect. It gives good men tools and brothers to help them try.

Before the Civil War, before the Arch rose over the riverfront, Freemasons were already at work in St. Louis.

Through our ancestor lodges, Gateway Lodge No. 40 traces its Masonic lineage in the St. Louis metro area back to 1840. The degrees we confer today are the same degrees taken by George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Harry Truman, and millions of good men across three centuries.

A lodge is not its building. It is the unbroken chain of men who have sat in its chairs, kept its charges, and passed its light to the next generation. We are honored to hold our link in that chain.
