On National Charity Day, we celebrate something at the very heart of Freemasonry: helping others through charitable relief.

At Gateway Lodge No. 40, charitable giving is not something added to our lodge business. It is a large part of the business. We spend much of our meetings discussing where our money can do the most good.

One of those meaningful gifts in 2025 was a four-figure donation to Coeur Police Department to help establish K9 Kali, its first Community Resource K9. Our lodge discussed the opportunity, voted on it, and proudly approved the donation.

Kali now serves alongside Officer Cambra Pogue as a comfort and therapy dog, helping the department connect with and support members of the community.

Our current Worshipful Master, Jerry Ward, is pictured at Kali’s swearing-in wearing the light blue polo. Michael Leonard, Gateway Lodge’s 2025 Worshipful Master, is standing at the far left.

Charity takes many forms. Sometimes it arrives on four paws.

There’s always one Brother who somehow knows where every form is, who still owes dues, what happened three meetings ago, and why that one thing was never entered into the minutes.

Respect your Lodge Secretary. He has seen things.

HELP A MISSOURI STUDENT FIND A SCHOLARSHIP

The Masonic Scholarship Fund of Missouri is preparing for its 2027 scholarship cycle, and Missouri Masons can help get the word out.

The Fund is encouraging members to share scholarship information with their local high schools so more Missouri students learn about the opportunities available to them.

It’s a simple way our fraternity can have an impact well beyond the walls of the Lodge.

If you know a student, parent, teacher, counselor, or school administrator who may benefit from knowing about the program, keep an eye out for information about the upcoming 2027 scholarship cycle and help pass it along.

🚗 DOES ANYONE HAVE AN OLD CAR THEY’D BE WILLING TO GIVE AWAY?

Brothers and friends, a local St. Louis mother with a young child is in need of reliable transportation. She’s working and hoping to start a small cleaning business, but not having a vehicle is making it difficult to get ahead.

If you have an old car, truck, or “beater” sitting around that still runs and you’d be willing to donate it, this lady could really use it.

Maybe you don’t have one yourself, but you know someone with an extra vehicle they’ve been meaning to get rid of. Please share this with them.

Relief is one of the principal tenets of Masonry. We can’t help everyone, but we can use the reach of our Lodge and our community to connect someone in need with someone in a position to help.

Even a share might put this in front of the right person.

Happy National Beard Day! Beards aren’t required in Freemasonry, but they do make contemplating the mysteries look much more convincing.

Here we have two magnificent examples, plus one brother who wisely stopped at the mustache.

Samuel Clemens, aka, Mark Twain, was a member of our Lodge.

Gateway Lodge No. 40 has been helping good men become better men since 1840 — more than 185 years of Freemasonry in the St. Louis area, decades before the Gateway Arch ever rose over the riverfront.

Generations of brothers have met around our altar: farmers and doctors, veterans and teachers, fathers and sons. The names change; the values don't — Brotherly Love, Relief, and Truth.

Today we carry that history forward in Creve Coeur, Missouri, and our door is open to the next generation. Read more about our lodge at gateway40.org.
