On Thursday, June 4th, South Habersham Middle School FFA members had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Farm Tour across Northeast Georgia thanks to the support of Habersham County Farm Bureau.
Our first stop was Texga Farms in Clarkesville, GA, where students learned about the beef industry from a direct-to-consumer beef operation. Students explored market values, discussed how many pounds of beef can come from a single animal, learned about daily farm operations, and heard from owner Caroline Lewallen about the history and growth of Texga Farms.
Our second stop took us to Blue Ridge Honey Company in Rabun County. Students learned about the honeybee industry, witnessed the honey extraction process, discussed honey market values measured by price per barrel, and enjoyed sampling a variety of honey flavors from across the United States.
Our third stop was Glo-Crest Farms in Cleveland, GA, home of Mountain Fresh Creamery. Students toured the dairy facility, learned about different dairy breeds and milking operations, and even witnessed the birth of a dairy calf an unforgettable experience for everyone involved.
Our fourth and final stop was the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network (GPLN) in Gainesville, GA. Students gained a broader understanding of Georgia’s poultry industry, learned about the importance of biosecurity, explored the role of diagnostics in animal health, and observed a poultry necropsy procedure.
We would like to extend a sincere thank you to Habersham County Farm Bureau for making this educational experience possible, as well as to all of the farms and facilities that welcomed our students throughout the day. Opportunities like these provide invaluable firsthand experiences and help students better understand the commodities and industries that support Georgia’s #1 industry agriculture.🌾🐄🐝🥛🐔
