🐾 DOBERMAN EDUCATION SERIES — WEEK 2 🐾

WHAT MAKES A RESPONSIBLE PRESERVATION BREEDER DIFFERENT?

One of the most common questions new Doberman owners ask is:
“How do I know if I’m choosing the right breeder?”

In today’s world, it’s easy to find Doberman puppies online. But finding a breeder who is truly dedicated to preserving and protecting the future of the breed is something very different.

Responsible preservation breeders are not simply producing puppies — they are working to preserve correct temperament, structure, health, working ability, and breed type for future generations.

A responsible breeder should be able to openly discuss:
• Health testing performed on their dogs
• Temperament and pedigree knowledge
• Longevity within their lines
• Breed-specific health concerns
• Why they chose a particular breeding
• Ongoing support for puppy owners

Preservation breeders also typically:
• Carefully screen potential homes
• Remain involved throughout the dog’s life
• Take responsibility for dogs they produce
• Compete in conformation, performance, or working events
• Breed with long-term goals for the breed — not simply availability or profit

Perhaps most importantly, ethical breeders genuinely care where their puppies go and work hard to create successful lifelong matches between Dobermans and their families.

Finding the right breeder can make an enormous difference in both the health and temperament of your future companion.

As always, our goal is not judgment — it’s education and helping people make informed decisions for the future of the breed we all love. 🖤

There’s been a renewed spotlight on the Doberman breed lately — and with that comes a lot of new interest, questions, and unfortunately… misinformation.

The Doberman Pinscher Club of Columbus is excited to launch a new educational series designed to help current and future Doberman owners make informed decisions and better understand this incredible breed.

Topics will include:
• Choosing an ethical breeder
• Health testing & breed preservation
• Ear cropping & posting education
• Training & temperament
• Doberman health concerns
• Resources for new owners
• And much more

Our goal is simple:
To support responsible ownership, protect the future of the breed, and provide trusted educational resources from experienced owners, breeders, exhibitors, trainers, and mentors.

Whether you already own a Doberman or are just beginning to learn about the breed, we hope this series becomes a valuable resource for you.

Follow along each week as we share knowledge, guidance, and honest conversations about the Doberman Pinscher we all love. 🖤 Feel free to ask any questions you may have by commenting below or messaging us.

Great information

Bloat (GDV) is one of the most serious emergencies we see in large, deep-chested breeds like Dobermans.

It can happen quickly and becomes life threatening fast, which is why recognizing the signs matters so much.

Some common symptoms include:
• pacing or restlessness
• unsuccessful attempts to vomit
• a swollen or tight stomach
• drooling
• obvious discomfort or distress

If you ever suspect bloat, don’t “wait and see.” Immediate veterinary care is critical.

One thing I strongly recommend to Doberman owners is having an emergency bloat kit at home and knowing where your nearest emergency veterinarian is located before you ever need it.

Preparation matters.
Time matters.

I’ve linked the emergency bloat kit I personally recommend below for anyone interested in adding one to their home emergency supplies:
