EAR CROPPING: WHAT NEW OWNERS SHOULD KNOW

One of the most frequently discussed topics within the Doberman breed is ear cropping.

Whether someone chooses cropped ears or natural ears, responsible owners share the same goal: raising healthy, well-loved Dobermans.

For those considering ear cropping, one of the most important things to understand is this:

Ear cropping is not a one-day procedure.

The surgery itself is only the beginning.

Successful cropped ears require:

• Proper aftercare and healing
• Consistent posting and support
• Patience and commitment
• Guidance from experienced mentors when needed
• Realistic expectations, especially during teething

Many first-time owners are surprised to learn that the posting process may continue for several months depending on the individual dog.

No two puppies are exactly alike, and patience is often one of the most important parts of the journey.

If you are considering ear cropping, don’t be afraid to ask questions and seek guidance from experienced Doberman owners, breeders, and mentors.

Education and support can make all the difference.

Whether your Doberman has natural ears or cropped ears, what matters most is providing a loving home and responsible care.

Our goal is not judgment — it’s education. 🖤

For those who have gone through the posting process, what advice would you give a first-time owner?

HEALTH TESTING: WHY DO WE DO IT?

One of the questions often asked by new puppy buyers is:

“If health testing doesn’t guarantee a disease-free dog, why is it important?”

The answer is both simple and complex.

No breeder can guarantee that a Doberman will never develop health issues. Unfortunately, many of the diseases affecting our breed are complicated, and despite the progress that has been made, there are still many things we do not fully understand.

Health testing is not about creating perfect dogs.

It’s about responsibility.

Responsible preservation breeders use the information available today to make the best decisions possible for future generations. Health testing, pedigree research, longevity within families, and ongoing evaluation all help breeders better understand the strengths and weaknesses within their lines.

Some of the evaluations commonly performed in Dobermans include:

• Echocardiograms (heart ultrasounds)
• 24-hour Holter monitoring
• OFA hip evaluations
• Thyroid testing
• Eye examinations
• von Willebrand Disease (vWD) DNA testing

Can health testing eliminate every disease?

No.

Can it provide valuable information?

Absolutely.

Can it help breeders make more informed decisions?

Yes.

Does it improve the odds?

We believe so.

Health testing is not a guarantee.

It’s an investment in better odds.

As our understanding of the breed continues to evolve, responsible breeders remain committed to learning, evaluating, and making the best decisions possible with the information available today.

Because we aren’t trying to create perfect dogs.

We’re trying to create better odds for future generations.

Our goal is not judgment — it’s education. 🖤

🐾 DOBERMAN EDUCATION SERIES 🐾

IS A DOBERMAN THE RIGHT BREED FOR YOU?

Dobermans are intelligent, loyal, athletic, and deeply devoted to their families. It’s easy to understand why so many people are drawn to them.

But before bringing any dog into your home, it’s important to ask an honest question:

“Is this breed truly a good fit for my lifestyle?”

Dobermans are not simply beautiful dogs — they are a working breed that was developed to be highly intelligent, responsive, and closely bonded to their people.

Future owners should understand that Dobermans typically:

• Thrive on companionship and family involvement
• Want to be with their people as much as possible
• Require physical exercise and mental stimulation
• Benefit from consistent training and structure
• Are highly intelligent and can become bored easily
• Often excel when given a job or purpose
• Are not typically content spending long periods isolated from their family

Many owners lovingly refer to Dobermans as “Velcro Dogs” because of their desire to be near their people.

While they can make incredible companions, they are not the right fit for every household—and that’s okay.

Choosing a breed that matches your lifestyle is one of the most important decisions a future dog owner can make.

The best match isn’t always the most popular breed. It’s the breed that fits your home, your goals, and your ability to meet its needs.

A well-matched Doberman and family can create an extraordinary bond that lasts a lifetime. 🖤

What was the biggest surprise you discovered after bringing your first Doberman home?

🐾 DOBERMAN EDUCATION SERIES — WEEK 2 🐾

WHAT MAKES A RESPONSIBLE PRESERVATION BREEDER DIFFERENT?

One of the most common questions new Doberman owners ask is:
“How do I know if I’m choosing the right breeder?”

In today’s world, it’s easy to find Doberman puppies online. But finding a breeder who is truly dedicated to preserving and protecting the future of the breed is something very different.

Responsible preservation breeders are not simply producing puppies — they are working to preserve correct temperament, structure, health, working ability, and breed type for future generations.

A responsible breeder should be able to openly discuss:
• Health testing performed on their dogs
• Temperament and pedigree knowledge
• Longevity within their lines
• Breed-specific health concerns
• Why they chose a particular breeding
• Ongoing support for puppy owners

Preservation breeders also typically:
• Carefully screen potential homes
• Remain involved throughout the dog’s life
• Take responsibility for dogs they produce
• Compete in conformation, performance, or working events
• Breed with long-term goals for the breed — not simply availability or profit

Perhaps most importantly, ethical breeders genuinely care where their puppies go and work hard to create successful lifelong matches between Dobermans and their families.

Finding the right breeder can make an enormous difference in both the health and temperament of your future companion.

As always, our goal is not judgment — it’s education and helping people make informed decisions for the future of the breed we all love. 🖤
