I am a veterinary geneticist at UW-Madison, and we are running a study seeking to understand the genetic basis of acquired urinary incontinence in Doberman Pinschers. This study is funded by the AKC Canine Health Foundation.



We are looking for spayed female Dobermans. If they have developed urinary incontinence, we would like them at any age. If they do not have a history of urinary incontinence, we would like them to have been spayed for at least 4 years. Participation involves a DNA sample (via blood or saliva) and completing a short questionnaire about their dog’s medical history. Do you have any dogs that may fit this criteria?

Bringing a Doberman into your family is an exciting decision, but choosing the right breeder is just as important as choosing the right puppy.

Asking thoughtful questions can help you better understand a breeder’s goals, priorities, and commitment to the breed.

Here are a few great questions to start the conversation:

• What health testing has been completed on the sire and dam?

• What qualities were you hoping to preserve or improve with this breeding?

• Can you tell me about the temperament of the parents?

• What support do you provide after the puppy goes home?

• If I have questions months from now, can I still reach out to you?

• If my circumstances change, will you always take one of your dogs back?

A responsible breeder should welcome your questions.

⚠️ URGENT HEALTH ALERT — European Dobermans, unknown currently untreatable liver virus detected and spreading fast!!!

The virus primarily targets young adult dogs and individuals with compromised immune systems, with the liver as its primary organ of attack. The clinical progression typically begins with complete loss of appetite, followed by progressive liver destruction. As the disease advances, the eyes develop a blue discoloration, and the outcome is invariably fatal. There is currently no known treatment.

What makes this virus particularly alarming is its ability to remain latent for up to 12 months before reactivating, typically during winter, and most aggressively when the dog’s immune system is under stress.

The hidden problem:

More than 60% of breeders in Serbia and the surrounding region are believed to have been affected. The first cases are said to be associated with dogs imported from Russia and Barymar kennel.

Despite this, the issue is being actively suppressed within breeder circles. Reputable breeders who are aware of the situation are largely staying silent, which puts buyers at serious risk. Notice how most breeders in the Balkans currently, unlike previous years, keep even larger pups non cropped, which reduces the chances of having them sold by 90%, since cropping will significantly reduce the immune system and open it to the virus.

If you are considering purchasing a Doberman from Europe — particularly from the Balkans and Russia — please exercise extreme caution, ask direct questions, and request full health transparency before committing to any transaction, including PCR and full blood biochemistry.

THE POSTING JOURNEY

Over the past two posts, we’ve talked about the commitment involved in ear cropping and why choosing an experienced veterinarian matters.

Now comes the part of the journey that often requires the most patience.

The posting process.

One of the biggest misconceptions among first-time Doberman owners is believing that ears should stand shortly after the stitches are removed.

In reality, ear posting commonly lasts months—not weeks.

As puppies grow, especially during teething, their bodies are developing rapidly. During this time, it’s completely normal for ears that were standing beautifully one week to weaken or even flop the next.

While it can be discouraging, it doesn’t necessarily mean anything has gone wrong.

It simply means the journey isn’t over.

Every puppy develops differently.

Some ears progress quickly.

Others simply need more time.

Successful ear posting isn’t about perfection.

It’s about patience, consistency, and trusting the process.

Posting should continue until the ears are strong enough to stand on their own—not simply because they looked good for a few days.

If you ever feel uncertain, don’t guess.

Reach out to your breeder or an experienced mentor. Most questions are easier to answer early than they are to fix later.

Beautiful, standing ears are rarely the result of luck.

They’re the result of thoughtful planning, an experienced cropping veterinarian, patient owners, consistent posting, and a strong support system.

Many experienced Doberman owners and breeders are willing to travel significant distances to seek veterinarians who have extensive experience with the breed and understand the unique characteristics of Doberman ear crops.

One of the greatest gifts a breeder can provide is education and support throughout the entire process.

Questions future owners may want to ask include:

• Who performs your ear crops?
• How much experience do they have with Dobermans?
• Will you help me with posting if I need assistance?
• Are there mentors available if I have questions?
• What style of crop do you prefer and why?
