Continuing our look at the award-winning trees from the Columbus Bonsai Society’s 53rd Annual Show.

🏆 Best Conifer
🌲 Japanese Red Pine (Pinus densiflora)
👤 Exhibited by Dwight Eric Maxwell

One of the giants of this year’s exhibition, this impressive Japanese Red Pine stands 35 inches tall, features a 45-inch canopy spread, and boasts an incredible 10-inch trunk diameter at the nebari.

Over 40 years old and in training for more than 20 years, this tree has a special history within CBS. Originally collected by CBS member Tom Holcomb, it later passed to Rob Hoffman and is now cared for by Dwight Maxwell, making Dwight the third steward of this remarkable bonsai.

Most recently, its styling and refinement were guided by featured artist Mark Arpag.

Congratulations to Dwight Maxwell on this outstanding Best Conifer award. 🌿

The show may be over, but we’re not done yet!
Over the coming days we’ll be sharing the award-winning trees and displays from the Columbus Bonsai Society 53rd show.

We begin with the tree that captured the admiration of our visitors.

🏆 People’s Choice Award
🌸 Satsuki Azalea (Yohozan)
👤 Exhibited by Rob Hoffman

This remarkable Satsuki Azalea impressed with its powerful massive trunk, refined branching, exceptional ramification, and stunning display of blooms. A tree over 40 years old and in training for more than 15 years, it represents the patience, dedication, and artistry that make bonsai so special.

Congratulations to Rob Hoffman on an outstanding exhibit and a well-deserved recognition.

Stay tuned as we continue highlighting the award-winning trees from the 53rd Annual Columbus Bonsai Society Show

🌿 A Special Thank You to Mark Arpag 🌿

As we reflect on what was the largest and most successful show in Columbus Bonsai Society history, we would like to extend a special thank you to our featured artist, Mark Arpag.

From helping set up displays and final touches on Friday to leading workshops, critiques, tours, and a public demonstration throughout the weekend, Mark was an incredible presence at our show. He generously shared not only his vast knowledge of bonsai, but also his deep understanding of Japanese aesthetics, helping members see their trees in new ways and encouraging bold design decisions that elevated many bonsai to the next level.

He spent countless hours engaging with members and visitors, answering questions, offering guidance, and sharing his passion for the art. He even stayed to help tear down the show at the end of the weekend.

What impressed us most was not only his talent and knowledge, but also his generosity, enthusiasm, humility, and willingness to help wherever needed.

We were honored to learn from him, spend time with him, and enjoy his friendship throughout the weekend. Mark helped make this year’s show truly special, and we are grateful for everything he contributed.

Please join us in thanking Mark Arpag for helping make our 53rd Annual Show such a memorable success. 🌿
