The beginning of something very special.
I have the tremendous honor and privilege of being commissioned by the American Guernsey Association to create the new Ideal Guernsey Cow—a new painted model for the breed, more than 60 years after the last one was created. The Guernsey has changed considerably over those decades, developing into a larger, stronger, more powerful dairy cow, and my job is to help visually define what that ideal looks like today.
Before a single brushstroke of the cow goes down, there is preparation. This 24" x 30" stretched canvas received three coats of gesso, a primer used to prepare the surface for an oil painting, with light sanding between each coat. It may not look like much yet, but this is where every painting begins—with a blank surface and a whole lot of possibilities.
After more than 40 years of painting dairy cows, growing up on a dairy farm, and still living and working with cows every day, I feel especially prepared for this challenge. I know cows. I love cows. And I care deeply about getting this one right.
Now the real work begins. ✨🖌
