No more Midwest modesty. Ohio is playing offense, and we want everyone to know we're on the map.

Bayer's investment in New Albany is a big win for , and we're proud to celebrate it alongside the partners who made it happen. Thank you to Carrie Ghose at Columbus Business First for covering Friday's event and telling the story behind the deal.

Ohio has lost projects to states like North Carolina and Texas… so we're building the Ohio Life Science Training Center to change that.

"There's a direct correlation between our investment in this training center and the confidence that it built for Bayer to invest." — Eddie Pauline, President & CEO, Ohio Life Sciences

"I love the Research Triangle, but we're not losing to them again." — Sloan Spalding, Mayor, New Albany, Ohio Government

We have more exciting coverage to share around the Ohio Life Science Training Center! Columbus CEO's fall special section on New Albany looks at how the city became one of Ohio's premier life sciences hubs, and why it earned a "Premier" ranking in our Life Science Ready Community Designation.

Inside:
⚪ How infrastructure, partnerships, and speed to market are putting New Albany on companies' shortlists
⚪ How the Ohio Life Science Training Center, opening in 2027, will help build Ohio's biomanufacturing talent pipeline
⚪ A piece from our President & CEO Eddie Pauline on why the regions that win in life sciences are the ones where research, talent, manufacturing, and capital all reinforce one another

Thank you to the City of New Albany, Ohio, and The New Albany Company for investing in the future of Ohio's life sciences workforce before a single ribbon was cut.

Strong patent protections are critical to the life sciences industry. They give companies the confidence to invest in research, develop new technologies, and bring lifesaving treatments to patients.

As the Senate considers the Medication Affordability and Patent Integrity Act (S. 2658), Ohio Life Sciences Association supports two amendments that would better protect innovators and their research.

Senator Jon Husted’s amendment would ensure that only material misrepresentations that actually affected whether a patent was granted—not honest mistakes or minor inconsistencies—could be used to challenge a patent. That's an important change that would reduce unnecessary litigation and compliance burdens, especially for Ohio's small and mid-sized life sciences companies.

We're grateful to Senator Husted for continuing to champion Ohio's life sciences industry and for recognizing the real-world impact this legislation could have on companies across our state. We also appreciate Senator Jim Banks’ amendment to strengthen protections for trade secrets and confidential business information.

These are thoughtful, commonsense changes that help protect innovation while maintaining the integrity of our patent system.

OLS will continue to advocate for our members at every level of government to ensure the policies being considered are beneficial (and protective/supportive) to the life sciences ecosystem.

Tomorrow at the Ohio STEM Innovation Summit, find us!

We're excited to have our own Angie McMurry joining Bo Tokarski from hims & hers to present a session on building real pathways for students into life sciences careers.

Their session digs into how educators and industry can work together to show students what's actually possible, whether that's a certificate program, a two-year degree, a four-year degree, or jumping straight into on-the-job training. Attendees will walk away with practical strategies for engaging employers, connecting workforce needs to the classroom, and embedding career exploration into STEM and CTE instruction.

Ohio's life sciences ecosystem is booming, and this session is all about making sure students know their options and feel prepared to pursue them.

If you're at the convention center, stop by the BioPathways booth, we're at Table 19, and we'd love to show you what's new. (Spoiler: we have a fresh new website with downloadable lesson plans ready for you 👇)

Creating meaningful forums where our members engage directly with public policymakers is a top priority, and today was a great example of that commitment in action.

We were honored to welcome Ohio Senate President Pro Tempore Bill Reineke for a candid, high-impact conversation with OLS members. Senator Reineke shared his enthusiasm for workforce development initiatives and his commitment to making hashtag an affordable, business-friendly state where innovation can thrive.

Our members spoke passionately about what’s at stake, and what’s possible:

🔹 Retaining life-changing IP in Ohio: Continued state investment is critical to ensuring that the breakthroughs being discovered here stay here.

🔹 Building the talent pipeline: Finding and developing the right workforce to fuel and sustain growth across biotech, pharma, medtech, and beyond.

🔹 Expanding access to capital: Partnering with the state to unlock the funding mechanisms that allow Ohio’s life sciences companies to scale.

We are grateful for Senator Reineke’s genuine interest in our industry and his recognition of the transformational impact life sciences has on patients and the Ohio economy. Conversations like this are how policy gets better, and how Ohio stays competitive.

More to come. 👏 👏 👏
